Wrestling: Federal Way school district sending 19 to the Mat Classic

To say Kyle McIntosh dominated the 145-pound bracket at Saturday’s Region I Wrestling Tournament would be putting it lightly.

The Thomas Jefferson senior breezed, rolled and cruised to the title in one of the better weight classes at Auburn High School. McIntosh wrestled three matches and all three ended in pins before the second round expired.

In the 145-pound championship match against Kentlake’s Sean Cavanaugh, McIntosh needed just 1:46 to pin the senior. McIntosh also pinned Cascade’s Thuan Ho (2:39) and Arlington’s Nathan Shortt (3:36) in earlier matches.

The three victories improved McIntosh’s season record to 33-1 and cemented him as one of the favorites to bring home an individual title at the Mat Classic state wrestling meet, which runs Friday and Saturday inside the Tacoma Dome.

McIntosh wasn’t the only Federal Way school district boy to capture a regional title Saturday. Decatur senior Dylan Aparis continued his strong season by snaring the 152-pound championship at the Region II tournament at Todd Beamer High School.

Aparis was also dominant on his way to the title match against Newport’s Kevin McCanta. Aparis pinned Lake Washington’s Dylan Reddinger in just 50 seconds before needing just 30 seconds to pin Skyline’s Danny Christianson in the semifinals.

But things wouldn’t be as easy against McCanta. Aparis needed overtime to beat the Newport senior, 18-13. The match was one of the most entertaining of the night and the highest scoring.

McIntosh and Aparis will be two of 19 wrestlers from the Federal Way school district to qualify for the state meet, including seven fromBeamer. Mat Classic gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday on 24 mats strewn across the floor of the Tacoma Dome.

Five girls from Federal Way High School will also wrestle at the Tacoma Dome in the girls tournament. Eagle wrestlers Jacie Weinberger and Bianca Arizpe won regional titles Saturday.

Region II tournament

The Todd Beamer Titans surprised a lot of people Saturday at the Class 4A Region II tournament. The Titans will be sending a school-record seven wrestlers to next weekend’s Mat Classic.

Of the seven Beamer wrestlers who placed in the top-four in their respective weight classes inside the Todd Beamer High School gym, four lost in championship matches — Tre Uson (112), Ares Carpio (119), Aron Set-Heit and Ben Draeger (160).

Uson lost to Rogers’ Bryce Evans in the 112-pound championship, 10-1. This will be Uson’s second trip to the Mat Classic. Last year, as a freshman, Uson finished 1-2 inside the Tacoma Dome at 103.

Carpio, also a sophomore, was beaten by Rogers’ Joe Palmer in the 119 final, 6-3, and Graham-Kapowsin’s Trevis Metcalf needed only 50 seconds to pin Set-Heit in the 130-pound championship. Draeger lost to Emerald Ridge’s James Souza in the title match, 11-2. This will be Draeger’s second straight appearance at the state tournament.

Beamer also qualified Deshar House (third at 125), Conner Gleason (third at 171) and Brandon Barcelona (fourth at 215).

The Graham-Kapowsin Eagles dominated the regional tournament at Beamer. The Eagles finished with 221 points, well ahead of second-place Rogers (154.5) and third-place Beamer (118.5). The tournament included schools from the South Puget Sound League South Division and the KingCo League.

In total, the SPSL South schools will occupy 38 of the 56 berths into the state tournament, which will run Friday and Saturday inside the Tacoma Dome.

Graham-Kapowsin will be sending 11 wrestlers to Tacoma, including four champions.

The Decatur Gators will be sending a total of four wrestlers to the Mat Classic. Joining Aparis, will be junior Rad Krysa, who finished third at 112 pounds, senior Tyler Thomas (fourth at 130) and senior Eric Godfrey (fourth at 140).

Region I tournament

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders got three wrestlers out of the ultra-rugged Class 4A Region I tournament Saturday at Auburn High School. Joining McIntosh in Tacoma will be 135-pounder Ivan Mukomol and 189-pounder K.W. Williams.

Mukomol, who wrestled at last year’s state tournament, finished up in fourth place, as did Williams. The top-four in each weight class advanced to state.

The No. 1-ranked Tahoma Bears outdistanced third-ranked Lake Stevens to win the team championship. Lake Stevens has won the last three state championships. But Tahoma qualified 10 wrestlers for state, while Lake Stevens will be sending seven. The Bears enter the state tournament as the favorite.

Girls Region II tournament

The Federal Way Eagles continued to impress, winning a pair of individual championships at the Region II tournament, held Saturday at Emerald Ridge High School.

Federal Way 112-pounder Bianca Arizpe won a 5-1 decision over White River’s Sam Lovelace, and 130-pounder Jocie Weinberger pinned Spanaway Lake’s Caeleenda Johnson in the championship match. Weinberger finished second at 125 pounds at last year’s Mat Classic.

The Eagles’ Kaylee Harris lost to Bremerton’s Lauren Richardson in the 103-pound final. Richardson pinned Harris in 1:29. Also qualifying for the state tournament were 112-pounder Axa Molina and 119-pounder Maria Manzueta.

Emerald Ridge won the regional team title with 134.5 points. Federal Way finished in fourth place with 94.
