SPORTS BRIEF: Federal Way SLAM! unbeaten in tournament

The Federal Way SLAM! 14-under fastpitch team traveled to the Tri-Cities to win the annual NSA Ice Breaker tournament.

The tournament included 138 teams and the SLAM! finished 5-0-1 taking on competition from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia.

The SLAM! outscored the competition by a combined score of 45-9. Pitchers Courtney Schwan and Madison Rogers each threw no-hitters and Faith Oiph led the team in hitting, going 6 for 12 with two home runs and 14 RBIs. Analee Scott went 7 for 12 and Courtney Schwan went 8 for 12.

The final game featured the SLAM! taking on the undefeated Abbotsford Outlaws ‘96 from British Columbia. In a pitcher’s duel, the SLAM! prevailed 1-0 behind the pitching of Bellarmine Prep freshman Courtney Schwan, who went the distance and no-hit the Outlaws. Schwan helped herself out by driving in the game-winning run.

The Federal Way SLAM! is made up of girls from around the Puget Sound region. Team members include Madison Rogers, Analee Scott, Tris Vandeman, Angela Leingang, Breanna Richardson, Nicole Jacobsen, Mallori Joyner, Faith Oiph, Courtney Schwan, McKenzie Schwan, Kylie White, Dana Jennings and Antionette Watson.
