Prep sports wrap: Simon, Johnson and Eagles sweep All-City cross country meet

The Federal Way cross country teams swept the All-City Meet Saturday over a 5-kilometer course at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Eagle boys and girls outran Beamer and Decatur.

The Eagle boys finished with four of the five fastest times Saturday, led by Meron Simon. Simon won the race in 16:41, which was just one second ahead of second-place Brandon Thornton, also from Federal Way. Teammates Nathan Brewster ended up fourth in 17:07 and Patrick Crews finished fifth in 17:09. Beamer’s Haftom Tafere finished in third place in 16:58.

The Eagle boys finished with 21 team points, followed by Beamer (37) and Decatur (68). The Gators’ top finisher was Paul Pinkstaff in eighth place (17:32).

The Federal Way girls were also impressive during the All-City Meet. The Eagles’ Jasmine Johnson continued her solid season with another first-place finish to lead Federal Way to a sweep. Johnson won the race by a minute over second place Sara Mussa from Beamer. Johnson finished in 18:30.

Federal Way’s Khianna Duncan finished third (21:08), Beamer’s Lauren Thomas was fourth (21:30) and Amanda Steffins from Federal Way was fifth (22:16).

The Eagle boys finished with 26 team points, followed by Beamer (39) and Decatur with 50 points.

The cross country postseason kicks off Saturday at Fort Steilacoom Park with the SPSL Sub-District Meet.

Golf

Decatur’s Amanda Beyke sits in second place after the opening round of the SPSL 3A Division State Qualifying Tournament. Beyke fired an impressive 5-over par, 77 on Thursday at the Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton.

Beyke, a state tournament veteran, trails only Peninsula’s Rachel Lewis, who leads the two-round tournament by eight strokes after shooting a 3-under, 69 at Gold Mountain.

State tournament berths were on the line Tuesday (after press time) when the SPSL 3A State Qualifying Tournament continues at Gold Mountain. The Class 3A State Tournament will be held in May.

Beyke helped Decatur tie for the SPSL 3A league championship with Enumclaw.

No Gator boy finished in the top-nine during the opening round. Enumclaw’s Tyler Salsbury leads with a 66.

Girls Soccer

The Todd Beamer Titans remained in first place in the SPSL South Division by finishing 1-0-1 on the week. The Titans (8-0-5) played second place Rogers to a scoreless tie on Saturday and beat Emerald Ridge, 2-0, Thursday afternoon.

The ninth-ranked Titans have allowed only three goals during their 13 games this season and have played to a pair of 0-0 ties. Beamer’s defense has thrown 10 shutouts in their 13 games with nine of those coming from the goalkeeping of Meghan Graf.

Against Emerald Ridge Thursday, the Titans got an early goal from Jenny Hoefel on a pass from Breanna Straus in the 13th minute. Autumn Talney got an insurance goal in the 51st minute on a pass from Katya Bixenman.

Federal Way (5-3-3) picked up a 3-0 win over Graham-Kapowsin Thursday aftneroon. The Eagles got a pair of goals from senior Haley Ward, who leads Federal Way with 14 goals and eight assists on the season. The Eagles’ other goal against Graham-Kapowsin came from Bianca Arizpe in the 52nd minute on a pass from Chandler Mader.

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders (5-4-2) fell into fifth place in the SPSL North with a 1-0 loss to Mount Rainier Thursday. The game seemed headed for a 0-0 tie before Mount Rainier’s Chelsie Still scored the game’s only goal in the 76th minute.

The Decatur Gators (4-2-0) dropped to third place in the SPSL 3A after a 2-1 loss to Bonney Lake Thursday. The win leaves Auburn Mountainview and Bonney Lake in a tie for first place with matching 5-1-0 records.
