Prep sports wrap: Jefferson tennis remains unbeaten; FW boys x-country sweeps opener

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders boys tennis team remained unbeaten in the South Puget Sound League Central Division with two more wins Monday and Tuesday.

The Raiders (6-0) beat Auburn Riverside Monday, 4-1, and swept Beamer Tuesday, 5-0. Jefferson didn’t lose a set against Beamer and got singles wins from Brandyn Gomez and Tyler Hamashima.

Against Auburn Riverside, TJ got victories from Kainoa Rosa at No. 1 singles and Brandyn Gomez and Alex Lee, Makoa Rosa and Cameron Sharpe and Andrey Streltsov and Connor Howard in doubles.

The Decatur Gators swept a pair of SPSL 3A matches this week. The Gators beat Auburn Mountainview Tuesday, 4-1, and Enumclaw Wednesday, 3-2.

Against Enumclaw, the two teams played an astounding four three-set matches with the Gators winning two. Decatur’s wins came from Abishak Murali at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, Christian Scognamiglio at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3 and Darrel Delvin and Peter An at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Cross Country

The Federal Way boys kicked off their SPSL season Wednesday by sweeping Graham-Kapowsin and Puyallup at Federal Way High School. The Eagles beat Graham-Kapowsin, 15-49, and downed Puyallup, 27-30.

Federal Way’s Meron Simon won the race in an impressive time of 13:32 and Patrick Crews finished fifth in 14:15.

The Eagle girls split their two meets. Federal Way beat Graham-Kapowsin, 19-36, and lost to Puyallup, 23-34. The Eagles’ Jasmine Johnson won the race at Federal Way High School in 16:21 and Khianna Duncan finished in fourth (17:40).

The Thomas Jefferson girls opened the SPSL season by splitting a three-way meet Wednesday at the Game Farm Park. Auburn Riverside beat the Raiders, 24-31, and TJ downed Auburn, 22-39.

Jefferson’s highest finisher during the meet was Leah Kiyohara, who finished in third place overall in a time of 20:11.3. Auburn Riverside’s Rachel Atwood won the race in 18:40.9.

On the boys’ side, the Raiders dropped both meets to Riverside and Auburn. The Ravens downed TJ, 16-45, and Auburn won 26-29. No TJ runners finished in the top-five Wednesday.

The Decatur Gator boys and girls were swept Wednesday by Peninsula in an SPSL 3A meet at Celebration Park. Paul Pinkstaff finished fourth on the boys’ side and Nichole Williams was fifth for the Decatur girls.

Soccer

Beamer (4-0-1) remained on top of the SPSL South with an 8-0 win over Bethel Tuesday. The Titans got two goals from Breanna Straus and Jenny Hoefel and single goals from Tiarra Fentress, Jenna Floyd, Jasmine Brilliante and Megan Anderson.

Jefferson (1-1-2) got a penalty kick goal from Lindsey Dahl and survived to beat Auburn Riverside Tuesday, 1-0. Ashlyn Bruin pitched the shutout in goal for the Raiders.

Volleyball

The Decatur Gators won a rugged five-gamer Tuesday over Bremerton in a non-league match, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9. The Gators got 13 kills and 16 digs from Audri Mooth and eight kills and six aces from Charisma Toilolo.

Jefferson and Beamer were both swept in their SPSL openers Wednesday. The Raiders lost to Kent-Meridian and Beamer was upended by Puyallup.

Federal Way played tough against Spanaway Lake, but lost in four games Wednesday, 25-10, 25-15, 17-25, 26-24. The Eagles got nine kills and four blocks from Carly Bottemiller, 30 digs from Kara Highberg and 22 assists from Luaipou Lologo.

Golf

The Jefferson boys got by Beamer Tuesday at Riverbend, 78-54. A.J. Seo had the low round of the day with a 1-over par, 37.

The Decatur boys beat Bonney Lake, 72-51, Tuesday at High Cedars. Carston Olufson earned medalist honors with a 3-over, 39.

On the girls’ side, the Decatur Gators got an impressive 3-over round from Amanda Beyke to lead to a 121-87 win over Bonney Lake Tuesday.

Auburn Riverside beat up Federal Way Tuesday at Northshore, 70-38. Emily Victor tied with Auburn Riverside’s Makenna Clark for low round with matching 48s.
