No. 1 Federal Way will play for first district title since 1994; Beamer one game away from state

It wasn’t their most impressive win of the season. But in the postseason, the No. 1-ranked Federal Way Eagles boys basketball team will take them anyway they can get them.

The Eagles (23-2) earned a berth into the West Central District championship game Wednesday night with a 59-54 victory over the Curtis Vikings (19-6) at Puyallup High School. Federal Way will take on the sixth-ranked Foss Falcons at 6 p.m. at Puyallup tonight. Foss, the champions of the Narrows League, pulled a mild upset over Decatur in the other district semifinal Wednesday, 64-61.

Despite all the success over the years of the Federal Way basketball program, the Eagles will be playing for their first West Central District championship since 1994.

But beating Foss will be a tough task. Just like Federal Way, the Falcons have won 12-straight games and looked impressive during the win over Decatur. Foss features a balanced scoring attack, led by seniors Demari Lewis, DeAndre Sutton and LaQuam Thompson.

Against Curtis, the Eagles built up a 14-point lead late in the first half after exploding on a 22-6 run. The eighth-ranked Vikings, however, fought back in the second half to cut the lead to just one, 52-51, with 1:18 to play in the game.

But Federal Way senior Jeffrey Forbes converted on a lay-up, junior Isiah Umipig hit one of two free throws and Michael Hale followed with a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a 56-51 lead with 8.1 seconds remaining. Curtis’ Darnell Williams followed with a three-pointer, but Umipig finalized the score with a pair of free throws.

Hale led Federal Way with 17 points and junior Cole Dickerson chipped in 15.

Beamer 67, Mount Tahoma 58 (loser-out)

The Titans (13-11) are one win away from qualifying for the school’s first-ever appearance at the Class 4A State Boys Basketball Tournament. The Ravens, who finished fifth in the South Puget Sound League South Division, beat the Mount Tahoma Thunderbirds Wednesday night in a loser-out game at Mount Tahoma.

It was the third game in a row during the district tournament that the Titans have played on the opposing team’s home court. Beamer lost at Foss in their opener, before beating Auburn and Mount Tahoma.

The Titans take on Bellarmine Prep (13-10) at 6 p.m. at Auburn Friday night in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. The Lions finished third at last year’s Class 4A State Tournament and feature McDonald’s All-American and University of Washington-signee Abdul Gaddy. Bellarmine beat Central Kitsap in overtime on a long three-pointer at the buzzer, 72-71, Wednesday in another loser-out game.

Beamer was in control of Mount Tahoma throughout the game Wednesday. The Titans led by two at halftime, 26-24, and one after three quarters, 42-41. But Beamer outscored Mount Tahoma, 25-19, during the decisive fourth quarter.

The 6-foot-8 Kevin Davis led the four Titans in double figures with 18 points. Sophomore Napa Mefi finished with 17, Chase Hildebrandt had 14 and Vlad Aficiuc chipped in 13.

Foss 64, Decatur 61 (both to state)

The Gators (20-4) won’t be playing for the West Central District championship. The Foss Falcons (20-4) made sure of that Wednesday night at Puyallup High School in a district semifinal.

Decatur had numerous opportunities down the stretch, but couldn’t pull the lead away from Foss, the winners of the Narrows League. The Gators will take on Curtis at 2 p.m. at Puyallup Saturday with the district’s third and sixth seeds to state on the line. It will be the third meeting of the year between the two teams, with Decatur winning the first two.

Wednesday night, Decatur took a 58-55 lead on a three-pointer from Jerron Smith with 2:30 remaining in the game, but back-to-back layups by Foss and three free throws put the Falcons up 62-55 with 26.8 seconds left.

Marcus Tibbs, Decatur’s leading scorer, hit a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to cut the Foss lead to 62-61. But Foss’ Julien Cruell hit two clutch free throws with 1.1 seconds left to put the Falcons up three. Tibbs got a good look at a game-tying three at the buzzer, but it rimmed out.

Tibbs, who was struggling with the flu, finished with nine points on just two field goals during the game.

Jordan McLoud finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds for Decatur, Smith had 16 points and Cam Schilling chipped in 15.
