The Mirror’s 2013 All-City Baseball Team
P — Chris Carns, Decatur
The junior turned into the Gators’ ace during the 2013 season that saw Decatur win its first state tournament game since 1989. Carns finished 7-3 with a 3.00 earned-run average and threw four complete games. He threw a complete-game shutout during a 2-0 win over Mountainview at the West Central District Tournament. Carns also struck out 73 hitters in 58 1/3 innings and allowed only 47 hits all season. He also hit .262 with 22 RBIs, 20 runs and two home runs at the plate.
P — Taylor Davis, Beamer
The sophomore was the ace of the Titans’ staff all season long. Davis finished the year 5-1 with a 1.62 earned-run average. He threw four complete-games and three complete-game shutouts. One of those was a 2-0 no-hitter over Curtis on April 1, where Davis struck out 11. He also shut out Federal Way twice.
He finished with 48 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. Davis also hit .319 with 11 RBIs, 10 runs, four doubles and one triple at the plate.
P — Janson Junk, Decatur
The junior finished 4-3 for the state-bound Gators with an impressive 2.77 ERA, with two of those losses coming to state champion Auburn Mountainview. The right-hander threw three complete games and 53 innings. He was a second-team, All-SPSL 3A selection and struck out 47. Junk also hit .308 with six RBIs and six runs at the plate.
C — Nathan Baughman, Jefferson
The senior is headed to Everett Community College in the fall. This season, for the Raiders, Baughman hit .300 with seven RBIs, 12 runs and two doubles. He also stole six bases and threw out 13 base runners in 22 attempts from his catcher position.
1B — Jim Sullivan, Decatur
The senior had a solid run-producing year for the Gators, who finished second in the SPSL 3A Division. Sullivan hit .388 with 26 RBIs, one home run, eight doubles and 17 runs. He finished 4 for 4 with four RBIs during a win over Lakes on April 3.
2B — Ben Arata, Beamer
The first-team, All-SPSL South second baseman had a huge sophomore year for the Titans. Arata finished with a .423 batting average and a team-best 18 RBIs. He also scored 15 runs and struck out only once during the season in 83 plate appearances.
Arata had 10 multi-hit games during the year and was 2 for 4 with four RBIs during a win over Spanaway Lake on March 22.
2B — Brandon Zimmerman, Decatur
The first-team, All-SPSL 3A second baseman finished with a .367 batting average and scored 23 runs with 15 RBIs. Zimmerman also had eight doubles and two home runs – and wrestled at Mat Classic for the Gators.
3B — Hunter Henry, Jefferson
The senior had an impressive season for the Raiders and was named to the All-SPSL North Division first-team as a designated hitter. Henry finished with a .299 batting average with eight RBIs, seven runs, six doubles and one home run. Henry’s best offensive game came against Kentlake, when he was 3 for 4 with a double.
SS — Isaiah Hatch, Decatur
The sophomore had an impressive debut season for the Gators. The shortstop hit .374 with 24 RBIs, five doubles, two triples and 23 runs. Hatch also finished with three home runs, including two during Decatur’s heart-breaking defeat in the state quarterfinals to Auburn Mountainview, 9-8. Hatch was also 4 for 4 with four RBIs and two doubles during a win over Enumclaw on March 27.
OF — Derik Bontempo, Decatur
The senior centerfielder led the Gators in every offensive category during the 2013 season. Bontempo hit .425 with 29 RBIs, 25 runs and five home runs. He also finished with three doubles and four triples and was a first-team, All-SPSL 3A outfielder. Bontempo also led the team with four stolen bases.
OF — Lawyer Braun, Beamer
The talented leadoff hitter had another huge year for the Titans. Braun hit .395 with a team-leading 20 runs, 13 doubles and 18 stolen bases. He also finished with 13 RBIs and two triples. Braun, a first-team, All-SPSL South selection by the league’s coaches, had a huge game during a 15-10 win over Rogers on May 7. Braun finished 4 for 5 with five RBIs, three doubles and two runs.
OF — Jarred Prather, Beamer
The senior outfielder hit .446 this season, scored 16 runs and knocked in 13 for Beamer, which finished 14-9 on the season. Prather also led the Titans with three home runs and was a first-team, All-SPSL South Division selection. He was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs during a win over Rogers on May 7.
DH — Kepa Sharpe, Beamer
The sophomore catcher led the Titans in hitting during the season with an impressive .456 batting average. Sharpe also had 17 RBIs, five doubles, 11 runs and one home run during the season. Sharpe had eight multi-hit games and threw out 36 percent of the runners trying to steal.
IF — Derek Klaas, Federal Way
The senior infielder led the Eagles in hitting with a .340 batting average. He also finished with 13 RBIs, scored 12 runs and connected on a pair of doubles. Klaas finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run.
Utility — Scott Sunitsch, Beamer
The junior had a strong all-around season for the Titans. At the plate, he hit .362 with 15 RBIs, 12 run, three doubles and two home runs. On the mound, Sunitsch was 2-3 in seven starts with a 4.24 ERA. He struck out 42 in 34 2/3 innings pitched.
