Football wrap: Beamer scores first victory of season; FW Eagles stay perfect; Gators and Raiders win big

The Todd Beamer Titans nabbed their first win of the 2011-12 season with a 21-18 win over Spanaway Lake on Sept. 29. The win moved Beamer to 1-2 in South Puget Sound League (SPSL) South play, and 1-3 overall on the season. Spanaway Lake got on the board first in the second quarter, when Marcus Thomas ran into the end zone from four yards out. Beamer answered with a 34-yard pass from Arjun Weherawattage to Willie Roach. After the Roach touchdown, the Sentinels edged back into the lead with a 26-yard field goal.

The Titans’ defense shut out Spanaway Lake in the third quarter, and edged ahead when Shawn Priggett ran for a touchdown from eight yards out.Marley Liulama scored the winning TD in the fourth quarter on a four-yard touchdown run. The Sentinels also got on the board in the fourth quarter, with Joe Martin scoring from a yard out, but it was not enough, as Beamer secured its first win of the season.

Federal Way

The eighth-ranked Eagles remained perfect on the season with a close 28-26 win over Bethel on the road. Bethel jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first half behind runs from David Fontenette and Jeffrey Holder. Federal Way found its way back into the game with a 14-point third quarter, after star running back D.J. May hit pay dirt on a 15-yard run. The second score of the third quarter came on an 80-yard kick return from the Eagles’ Zeke McNeal.

Federal Way put another 14 point up in the fourth quarter — on a 35-yard pass from Evan Elliott to Aaron Persinger and a two-yard TD run from Rod Jones. Bethel added a safety in the fourth quarter to close the gap, but could not overcome the SPSL South’s first place team. The Eagles remain the SPSL South’s only unbeaten team at 5-0.

Decatur

The Gators scored often and early in their 36-7 rout of Enumclaw. Decatur got on the board in the first quarter with a 13-yard pass from Abraham Ferrell-Logan to Michael Klavuhn. Two touchdowns in the second quarter came on a 34-yard run and two-yard run from Curtis Havill, pushing Decatur even further ahead in the contest. Enumclaw’s only score of the game came in the second quarter. Enumclaw’s Tyler Carson put the Hornets on the board. Klavuhn and Ferrell-Logan also connected again in the game on a 15-yard pass. Decatur improved to 4-1 on the season overall, and 1-0 in SPSL 3A play.

Thomas Jefferson

The Raiders improved to 3-2 in SPSL North Play with a 42-30 win over Kent-Meridian on the road. TJ put up 34 points in the first half, digging an almost impossible hole for Kent-Meridian. The Royals tried to dig out of it with a 20-point third quarter, but the Raiders kept the game out of reach, answering with eight points in the fourth quarter. The Raiders stand atop the SPSL North, a game in front of Auburn.
