Dominating is the best way to describe Federal Way High School’s 48-6 win over the previously unbeaten Kentlake Falcons Friday night at French Field in Kent.
The Eagles dominated in every aspect of the pivotal South Puget Sound League North Division game. Federal Way (3-1 overall, 2-1 in the North Division) scored a touchdown pretty much in every way possible against Kentlake, including two scores on special teams, a defensive touchdown, two rushing touchdowns, as well as a 56-yard touchdown pass.
The victory over Kentlake sets up another huge SPSL North showdown Friday night. That’s when the Eagles will travel to Maxwell Stadium at Tahoma High School to battle the undefeated Tahoma Bears.
Friday night it was all Eagles against a stunned Kentlake team. Federal Way rolled out to a 41-0 lead at halftime, despite a lack of offense in the opening quarter.
Despite totaling only 20 yards of offense and no first downs during the first quarter of play, the Eagles were up 14-0, thanks to their special teams and defense.
Both of Federal Way’s scores came on returns. Nico Curran fielded a Kentlake punt and rolled 65 yards down the sideline to give the Eagles a quick 7-0 lead.
After the first of Kentlake’s five turnovers in the half, Federal Way’s Kelyn Rowe missed a 44-yard field goal. But on the very next play, Federal Way safety Nick Tanielu intercepted a Kentlake pass and returned it 33 yards to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead with 5:08 to go in the first quarter.
The Federal Way offense, however, got things going in the second quarter, totaling close to 150 total yards.
Andre Barrington, playing in his second game of the season after returning from a knee injury, rushed for 97 yards on 11 first-half carries and had touchdown runs of 8 and 5 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Tanielu added a 56-yard first-half touchdown pass to Daytrez Sterling and a 19-yard rushing score of his own.
Federal Way’s lone second-half score came after Stanley Matau recovered a blocked punt in the endzone to give Federal Way a 48-0 lead. Kentlake added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to finalize the score.
The Federal Way starters didn’t play during the second half. The Eagle defense held Kentlake to just 41 total yards in the first two quarters.
