The top-ranked Federal Way Eagles continued an unbeaten season with a 61-45 win over Bethel Monday in Spanaway.
The Eagles (5-0) blew open a close game against the Braves by outscoring Bethel 21-14 during the third quarter. Federal Way was led by the 17 points of Ty Burgess and got 16 from Dyesha Belhumeur and 15 from Darah Huertas-Vining.
The Eagles will next play at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational Tournament at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene Dec. 28-30. The eight-team tournament features teams from Washington, Idaho and Nevada.
The Todd Beamer Titans continued their impressive early season with a 56-38 win over Thomas Jefferson Saturday in a non-league contest. The Titans (5-2) broke open a tie game in the second half by outscoring the Raiders 31-13 during the third and fourth quarters.
Beamer was led by the 19 points of Shyla Akins and got 11 points each from Megan Huff and Meghan Graf.
Jefferson (3-5) was led by the 16 points of Jada Piper.
Decatur was beaten up by Sumner Monday in a non-league contest, 69-30. Sumner jumped out to a 17-1 lead after the first quarter and led 33-5 at halftime.
The Gators (2-4) were led by 14 points from senior Takiya Flowers.
Boys basketball
The Federal Way Eagles boys basketball team dropped its third game in their last four Tuesday night at the South Sound Classic at Saint Martin’s University.
The Class 2A River Ridge Hawks got by the Eagles, 67-51, to advance to the championship game of the four-team tournament. Federal Way also lost to top-ranked Garfield and second-ranked Curtis in the last two weeks. River Ridge (4-1) is the second-ranked Class 2A school in the state.
The Eagles (3-3) started out solidly, building a 14-9 lead during the first quarter. But River Ridge erupted on a 21-4 run to take a commanding 30-18 lead late in the second quarter. Federal Way was held scoreless for more than five minutes during that stretch.
The Eagles used a 7-0 run to cut the River Ridge lead to 50-43 to start the fourth quarter. But that was as close as it would get.
