Federal Way representatives have bills signed into law

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on March 29 signed into law two bills introduced by Federal Way’s representatives.

Rep. Linda Kochmar’s bill (HB 2403) requires health care providers to distribute more information to expecting parents of children diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

“As couples enter a new chapter of their lives as parents, it’s crucial they’re equipped with information that will help them best care for their child,” Kochmar said in a statement. “The level of misinformation spread about Down Syndrome is astonishing, and we must ensure evidence-based information is available to new parents.”

Rep. Teri Hickel’s bill (HB 2877) extends the date range for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits distributions from 10 to 20 days.

“SNAP is an important program for so many families in Washington state, but the current benefit distribution model isn’t working as well as it should,” Hickel said. “Expanding the date range for SNAP benefits to be distributed will increase access to a wider range of food products and allow families to shop without having to navigate long lines. This bill is good for grocers and SNAP recipients alike, and I am so pleased to see it signed into law.”

Kochmar’s bill will go into effect later this year. Hickel’s bill requires the Department of Social and Health Services to expand the benefit distribution date range by Feb. 1, 2017. The federal government is expected to pay for half of the costs to implement the changes to SNAP.
