Parks Appreciation Day April 23

Published 10:00 am Sunday, April 10, 2016

Hundreds of volunteers will converge on Federal Way parks on Saturday, April 23, as the city celebrates the annual Parks Appreciation Day.

The event, which is from 9 a.m. to noon, helps beautify and improve the parks, making Federal Way an even better place to live.

More volunteers are always needed.

“We encourage volunteers to bring tools such as rakes, shovels, loppers and clippers, as well as gloves, sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty,” said Parks and Facilities Manager Jason Gerwen. “But if you don’t have tools, still come. Some tools are available.

“And bring your friends,” he added.

This is a family event with fun work for all ages. Individuals as well as groups of all sizes are welcome. Come to Celebration Park and West Hylebos Wetland Park the day of, or pre-register for special projects at the new Town Square Park and Adelaide Park by emailing jason.gerwen@cityoffederalway.com. Families with children are encouraged to volunteer at Adelaide and West Hylebos Wetland. Free lunch will be served at all work sites.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer for Parks Appreciation Day. Volunteers will hand out fliers in neighborhoods surrounding the parks to encourage neighbors to help with the project.

“We want to make Federal Way the best possible place to live,” said Jack Walsh, who for the past 10 years has helped organize hundreds of volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregations. “If the parks are kept in good repair and looking nice, that’s good for quality of life.”

Volunteers from various Federal Way churches, civic organizations and schools, as well as individuals, will be working side by side this year to enhance the parks.
