Businesses report transients loitering, littering and alarming customers

Transients erect camps, pass out in doorway at two Federal Way businesses.

Following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:

Jan. 30

Business burglary: At 5:17 a.m. at 1617 S. 324th St., police were dispatched to a business regarding an audible commercial alarm. Officers discovered there was evidence of entry through a window. Police searched the building but did not locate any suspects. The manager reported no property was missing. The manager also said they requested recorded surveillance from the business headquarters in Olympia. Detectives processed the business for latent prints.

Agency assist: At 12:34 a.m. at 400 S. 348th St., police were advised by King County Prosecutor’s Office of a warrant for the subject’s arrest. The subject had cut off his GPS device. Members of the Federal Way Police Department’s SIU observed the male get into a vehicle as a passenger. Police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and arrested the subject with the warrant. He was transported to the Kent Regional Justice Center jail and booked on his warrant.

Organized theft: At 6:11 p.m. at 34520 16th Ave. S. police arrested two suspects after Walmart loss prevention uncovered an organized theft of expensive Apple I-Phones via fraud contracts.

Sex offense: At 5:03 p.m. in the 1000 block of SW 323rd St., a middle school teacher called police to report that a student disclosed that they had been molested from the time they were 5 years old.

Weapons offense: At 7:08 p.m. at 2101 S. Commons, a 15-year-old concealed a pair of jeans inside the Kohl’s store and exited without paying for the merchandise. After the store’s loss prevention failed to stop the teen for theft, they contacted police with the suspect’s description and direction of travel. Police contacted the suspect on the north side of The Commons mall during which time loss prevention identified him as the person who committed theft. During a search, police found a loaded 9mm handgun concealed inside his jacket pocket. He was booked into King County Juvenile Detention for unlawful possession of a firearm.

Jan. 29

Business burglary: At 2 a.m. at 1014 S. 320th St., police responded to a commercial alarm. They discovered that the front door was pried open. Two subjects entered the pharmacy and stole an unknown quantity of pills and money. Police did not have suspect information at the time of the report.

Increased transient activity: At 8:21 a.m. at 728 S. 320th St., a representative of a geriatric dental office contacted police in regards to increased transient activity. The business is experiencing trespassing issues and drug use during the late night and early morning hours. The representative was concerned as employees and early morning patients arrive to find transients passed out in the front of their doorway. The reporting party indicated that they would be looking into preventative measures, however they would re-contact police when additional assistance is needed.

Trafficking: At 1:04 p.m. at an unknown location, police were dispatched following the report of prostitution. The reporting party said she believes a 26-year-old suspect is trafficking her 15-year-old daughter.

Employee caught stealing: At 4:51 p.m. at 28810 Military Road S., Safeway loss prevention called police after obtaining video of an employee stealing cash from the CoinStar machine. This occurred on Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 for a total of $98.40. Loss prevention contacted the employee, who admitted to the thefts. They recovered $44.20 from the employee, who was subsequently cited and released on scene.

Theft from restaurant: At 5 p.m. at 35109 Pacific Highway S., a known male entered the Ban Som Tum restaurant and stole $150 in cash from the register. Police completed a citation and sent it to the prosecutor’s office.

Firearm robbery at business: At 10:22 p.m. at 31220 Pacific Highway S., the suspect implied he was armed with a gun and motioned towards the cash register. The suspect did not obtain any money and fled. Police had not located the suspect as of this report.

Jan. 28

Weapons offense: At 4:31 a.m. at 32603 43rd Place SW, officers responded to sounds of gunfire in the area. Police located several 22 caliber casings scattered about Hoyt Road SW. A dark colored SUV or utility vehicle was reportedly seen leaving the area. Officers checked the area for the vehicle but did not locate it. No victims were reported nor located. The casings were booked into evidence.

Increasing problems with transients: At 10:25 a.m. at 31430 Pacific Highway S., a representative of Wild Willy’s reported increasing problems with transients trespassing on their property. The reporting party said transients are loitering, littering, erecting camps, alarming customers and employees. The reporting party advised of the police department’s ongoing efforts to enforce the no trespassing laws and working with resource providers. In addition, the city’s code compliance deparment has been made aware of the issue at this location. The business representative will re-contact police if and when further assistance is needed.

Suspicious activity: At 5:10 p.m. at 32000 Pacific Highway S., an unidentified male entered Chase Bank claiming to represent a security company and asking bank officials if the location was staffed with security. The bank manager told police the male appeared nervous, fumbled his words and failed to produce any kind of supporting business documents, causing suspicion of his motives. The male asked no questions pertaining to business hours, security cameras or other security interests. Once told the business already had security the male reportedly left on foot. The bank manager requested the incident be documented. Police requested the bank’s video footage and will entered the evidence in this case once they obtain it.
