From staff reports:

The city reports that this summer during the 2011 asphalt overlay project, the city paved 13.7 lane miles of roadway, using 15,000 tons of asphalt. The city also replaced 85 wheelchair ramps.

Each year, Public Works staff survey and rate the quality of one-half the city road surfaces and use those ratings to prioritize which road sections will be included in that summer’s overlay work, according to the city. The city uses a rating system called OCI (Overall Condition Index) that rates road surface quality on a point system from 0 to 100, with a score of 100 being a newly paved road.

Federal Way’s goal is to maintain an average rating of 79 percent or more, according to the city. This summer, the city finished overlay work on S. 320th, 21st Avenue SW and in local neighborhoods.
