Five Federal Way schools recognized for conservation efforts

Five Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) were recognized for participation in the King County Green Schools Program (KGSCP) during the 2017–18 school year.
The schools worked to reduce waste, increase recycling, and conserve natural resources, engage both students and staff in learning about and practicing resource conservation.
Camelot, Green Gables, Olympic View elementary schools and Sequoyah Middle School were recognized as King County Sustaining Green Schools for maintaining Level One (waste reduction and recycling), Level Two (energy conservation), and Level Three (water conservation and pollution prevention) practices, and completing an additional conservation action or educational strategy.
Kilo Middle School was recognized as a Level One King County Green School for its waste reduction and recycling practices.
These efforts are in support of the district strategic plan Goal 2: Thriving, Confident, Responsible Individuals.
The KGSCP provides hands-on help and the tools, such as recycling containers and signs, to make improvements.
The program helps teach students and staff to only recycle materials they know are allowed. To reduce contamination in recycling bins important messages such as “no liquids or food in recycling bins” are emphasized. Students in turn bring these lessons home.
