Kyle McIntosh couldn’t hold in his emotions any longer.

The Thomas Jefferson High School senior spent the last year eating, sleeping and drinking the sport of wrestling in anticipation of winning a state championship. After finishing fifth at last year’s Mat Classic, McIntosh (37-1) had a single-minded goal of having his arm raised inside the Tacoma Dome.

Mission accomplished.

And McIntosh’s emotions were on full display after the senior had a tearful leap into the arms of his coach, Jess Workman, after beating Kamiakin’s Pedro Mendoza in the 145-pound championship, 10-7, Saturday night.

“I’ve attained one of my goals,” McIntosh said. “I have worked hard over the past five years. I’ve been to countless camps and countless tournaments. It feels amazing.”

McIntosh wasn’t the only Federal Way school district wrestler to snare a state championship Saturday in Tacoma. Beamer sophomore Ares Carpio won the 119-pound bracket, giving the school its first-ever state wrestling title.

Carpio will have the opportunity to win two more championships, but this was McIntosh’s final shot and he didn’t disappoint.

“This was my best tournament,” McIntosh said. “I am peaking at the right time.”

McIntosh, who entered Mat Classic as the favorite at 145, had a fairly easy run to the championship. He beat South Kitsap’s Taylor Lyman in his opener Friday, 10-4, and dominated Mead’s Ben Snow in the quarterfinals, 12-2.

McIntosh earned the championship berth Saturday morning with a 12-4 win over Kelso’s Niko Hughes in the semifinals.

“I was a little sloppy during the championship match and gave up a couple takedowns,” McIntosh said. “But I did what I had to do to win. That’s all that matters.”

Hughes took an early 4-1 lead in the first quarter after those two takedowns. But McIntosh countered with a takedown in the final seconds of the first period to trail only 4-3 entering the second. That’s when McIntosh took control with a pair of takedowns and an escape to take an 8-5 advantage. He added another takedown in the third period.

“This is just awesome,” said Workman. “It’s something we all worked hard for. I’ve been on the journey with him.”

Workman knows all about the emotion that goes along with wrestling to a state championship inside a packed Tacoma Dome. Workman won the Class 4A heavyweight title back in 1997 during his senior year at Lincoln High School.

“It’s a lot different,” Workman said. “This is all about him. This is what all us coaches work for. This is the best feeling in the world, better than when I won a state title.”

Carpio’s title was a little more surprising than McIntosh’s. Unlike McIntosh, who came into Tacoma as the favorite at 145, Carpio entered the Mat Classic as an underdog.

That was more than evident in the 119-pound final when he matched up against Rogers’ Joey Palmer. It was the third time the two had wrestled in the last three weeks with Palmer winning the previous two meetings at the South Puget Sound League South and Region II tournaments.

But the third time was the charm for Carpio, who won the first-ever state wrestling title for Beamer.

Carpio dominated Palmer, winning a 9-3 decision. The Beamer sophomore proved to be the best all-around athlete in the 119-pound bracket and the six-point win in the final was the closet match he wrestled inside the Tacoma Dome.

Carpio pinned Kentlake’s Colton Marlowe in his opening match Friday, beat Southridge’s Ely Garza in the quarterfinals, 12-5, and dominated Heritage’s Austin Franzier in the semifinals, 12-4.

The titles by McIntosh and Carpio capped a very impressive state wrestling meet for Federal Way. The school district had a total of four wrestlers who wrestled in title matches inside the Tacoma Dome.

Decatur senior Dylan Aparis lost in the 152-pound title match and Federal Way junior Jocie Weinberger finished second for the second year in a row, this time in the 130-pound bracket at the Girls Mat Classic.

Aparis’ appearance in the championship match was the third-straight year a Decatur wrestler has competed for a state title. Heavyweight Tevyn Tillman won a pair of titles in 2008 and ’09 and 189-pounder Darren Faber lost in the championship last year.

Like Faber, Aparis didn’t have enough in the title match. University’s Ryan Zumwalt pinned the Decatur senior in 3:21. But Aparis’ run into the 152-pound championship was impressive.

Aparis started the Mat Classic with a 41-second pin of Monroe’s Anthony Dimaggio, followed by a 12-6 win over Pasco’s Cody Rush. Aparis then downed Wenatchee’s Nick Hunt, 16-7, to earn a berth in the final.

Weinberger completely dominated the 130-pound bracket on the girls’ side before losing in the championship match to Rochester’s Liezl Mondoc. The junior was just too much for Weinberger. The Federal Way junior couldn’t penetrate the defense of Mondoc, losing a 3-0 decision.

To say Weinberger cruised into the title match would be an understatement. She pinned her first three opponents, including a second-round pin of Ilwako’s Nakasha Custer in the semifinals.

State wrestling notes:

• Ivan Mukomol got in a lot of mat time during the two-day Mat Classic inside the Tacoma Dome. After suffering a minor upset in his opening-round match Friday morning to Graham-Kapowsin’s Grant Steen, the senior reeled off five-straight wins in the consolation bracket to finish in third place in the 135-pound bracket. Mukomol finished fourth at last week’s Region I tournament.

Mukomol pinned Heritage’s Durant Fish in 2:38, beat Kamiak’s Nate Regan, 4-2, and then won a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Tahoma’s Jordan Higa Saturday morning. He then beat Davis’ Nick Sauceda, 4-2, before winning the third-fourth match over University’s Kevin Harder, 7-3.

• Beamer senior Ben Draeger ended up in fifth place at 160 pounds after compiling a 4-2 record at the Mat Classic. After beating Kent-Meridian’s Nick Lemmon in his opening match, 9-1, Drafter was pinned by eventual state champion Jake Mason from University in the quarterfinals.

Draeger then beat Kentridge’s Jeff Seid, 13-4, and South Kitsap’s Craig Dyess, 4-1. After losing to Emerald Ridge’s James Souza, Draeger beat Lemmon again in the fifth-sixth match, 3-2.

• Federal Way 112-pounder Bianca Arizpe rolled into the semifinals in the girls tournament before losing two-straight matches. Arizpe, a freshman, ended up in fifth place after beating Stanwood’s Casey Mather Saturday, 6-4. Arizpe lost to eventual state champion Madelynn McIlwain in the semifinals. McIlwain, from Washougal, won all four of her matches by pin.

• Federal Way’s Maria Manzueta finished in fourth place in the 119-pound girls bracket. The junior lost her opening match before winning four-straight matches in the consolation bracket, including two by pin. Manzueta eventually lost to Kelso’s Elle Mustioin in the third-fourth match, 1-0.

• Beamer’s Connor Gleason finished eighth at 171 after winning two matches in Tacoma. Gleason beat Cascade’s Peter St. Marie, 6-2, and Wenatchee’s Brian Nygard, 11-1.

• Federal Way 103-pounder Kaylee Harris finished 1-2 at the girls state tournament. Harris beat Mount Baker’s Dani Mata in the consolation bracket, 7-6.

• Deshar House, a Todd Beamer sophomore, pinned Edmonds-Woodway junior Mac Hutchinson in his opening-round match Friday in 2:28, before losing his next two matches at 125 pounds.

• Decatur senior Tyler Thomas lost both his matches Friday at Mat Classic at 130 pounds, including a 7-5 overtime defeat to South Kitsap’s Spencer Ricketson.

• Beamer sophomore Aron Set-Heit finished 1-2 at his first Mat Classic at 130 pounds. Set-Heit pinned Ian Sprecher in the cosolation bracket in 2:24.

• Beamer sophomore Tre Uson dropped both his matches Friday at 112 pounds.

• Jefferson sophomore KW Williams finished 1-2 at 189 pounds. Williams beat Lake Washington’s Inrahim Khifeh in the consolation bracket, 16-0.

• Decatur junior Rad Krysa lost a pair of matches Friday at 112 pounds.

• Beamer 215-pounder Brandon Barcelona won one match Friday over Lake Stevens’ Brandon Johnson, 4-1.

• Decatur’s Eric Godfrey lost both his matches at 140 pounds Friday.
