The Decatur wrestling team already has a pair of tournament titles under its belt during the early part of the season. The Gators dominated their own 18-team tournament Saturday, winning the Hurricane Harris Invitational at Decatur.
The Gators also added an impressive 77-0 shutout of Jefferson Tuesday night in a non-league dual meet and a 57-16 win over Bonney Lake Wednesday.
Against TJ, the Gators combined for seven pins, one technical fall and two decision wins over the Raiders. Decatur also received four forfeits.
Rowland Gaydosh had the quickest pin of the night in just 18 seconds at 195 pounds. Trysten Dawson added a 24-second pin at 113 and Maxwell Henry needed only 32 seconds at 160 pounds.
The Gators got pins from Austin Thomas (106), Dawson (113), Leviticus Arizpe (120), AJ Sarno (152), Karis (170), Justin Robinson (220) and Gleed (285) against Bonney Lake in the SPSL 3A meet.
At the Hurricane Harris Invitational, the Gators blew away the competition, garnering 228 points and five championships Saturday. Second-place Sumner finished with just 125 points and Selah was third with 118.5.
Decatur won a total of five individual championships and the team title is the second in a row at the Hurricane Harris Invitational. The tournament is named after Robert “Hurricane” Harris, who drowned in Lake Tapps in September of 2011. Harris was a standout wrestler for the Gators.
Leviticus Arizpe shut out Sumner’s Travis Filleau to win the 120-pound championship, 6-0, Isaiah Diggs beat Decatur teammate Dennis Good to win the 138-pound title, 3-1, Nick Karis won at 182 pounds over Decatur teammate Spencer Smith, 14-7, Rowland Gaydosh beat Wilson’s Jake Ferris to win at 195, 3-2, and heavyweight Kyle Gleed beat Kentlake’s Tyler Deskins, 3-0.
Not only did the Decatur varsity team win the championship Saturday, but the Gator junior varsity finished eighth with 102 points, ahead of nine other varsity teams.
“I have never had such a tough bunch of freshmen and sophomores enter my program,” said head coach Mike Bressler. “These kids just want to win and love to battle.”
Beamer
The Titans ended up second at the prestigious, 23-team Battle at the Border 2012 tournament in Blaine. Kentwood won the tournament with 234 points and Beamer finished with 225.
The Titans also snared three individual weight championships from Brett Dykman, Ishaiah Bell and Mitchell Owens.
Dykman won the 113-pound title after beating Black Hills’ Mason Adams in the championship, 7-0. Belle also beat a Black Hills wrestler at 132 pounds, 11-3, and Owens downed Kentwood’s Jamiel Jackson at 152, 10-8.
In total, the Titans won 52 matches during the tournament, including 18 by pin, and lost only 21. Beamer had a total of eight placers.
The Titans’ other placers were Brian Dykman (third at 120), Carlos Castro (fourth at 120), Jordan Rhodes (third at 113), Malik Messiah (second at 106) and Haftom Tafere (fifth at 132).
Federal Way
The Eagles finished third at the 15-team George Wilfong Classic at Puyallup High School Saturday. Puyallup won the tournament with 222.5 points and Olympia was second (138). Federal Way finished with 136.5 points.
The Eagles got championships from Alex Davidson at 106 pounds and Brandon Henderson at 113.
Davidson pinned Olympia’s Trevor Shaw in the championship in 2:42 and Henderson pinned Bellarmine Prep’s Andrew Turner in just 1:24. Daniel Song finished second at 120 pounds.
