Twin Lakes Penguin relay team breaks record from 1993

Cheering broke out as the results of the senior boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay were posted at the SSSL Southern Division Championships on July 19. After working all summer to do so, the Twin Lakes Penguin relay team succeeded in breaking the standing 1993 team record in the event.

Tanner Brotherton, Connor Hassur, Noah Johnson, and D’Voreaux Cann teamed up to swim the relay in 1:29:81, breaking the 1:30:12 time set by their 1993 counterparts.

“It’s exciting,” said Hassur, a 15-year-old sophomore at Puyallup High School, who also swims for Valley Aquatics Swim Team.

Johnson, a senior at Bellarmine Prep who swims for Decatur High School in Federal Way added, “It was a really great feeling when we saw we had done it. A wave of excitement came over the team.”

And though they were celebrating, with ice cream sundaes donated by Red Robin, they’ve already set their sites on a new goal: the All City Record of 1:29:50.

Brotherton is a senior at Decatur High School, and swims for King County Aquatics in addition to Decatur.

Cann gradutated in June from Stadium High School and will be attending the University of Michigan this fall on a swimming scholarship.
