Tracking the grads: Rowe and UCLA to play in the second-round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament

Kelyn Rowe — The 2010 Federal Way graduate and last year’s state player of the year is impressing for the eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins. The freshman midfielder has started all 18 matches for the Bruins this season and is tied for the team lead in points. Rowe has six goals and eight assists. UCLA is currently 14-4-1 and ranked 11th in the nation.

The Bruins and Rowe will participate in its 28th consecutive NCAA Tournament, opening up play with a second-round home game against Sacramento State (11-4-7)on Sunday, Nov. 21.

UCLA received an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament after finishing in second place by one point in the Pac-10 Conference behind sixth-seeded California.

Murphy Campbell — The Federal Way High School graduate played his junior season at Santa Clara University. The midfielder started 20 matches for the Broncos this season and had one goal and one assist. Santa Clara finished the regular season 10-5-5 on the season and 7-1-4 to win the West Coast Conference championship. Campbell was an honorable mention All-WCC pick earlier this week.

The Broncos played in their 19th NCAA Tournament on Thursday in an opening-round game against Sacramento State, losing 2-1.

Josh Smith — The 2010 Decatur grad started six games as a freshman for the Oregon State soccer team and played in 15. The all-state midfielder helped the Beavers to a 6-11-0 record. He had two shots on the season.

Chris Miller and Kodey Eley — Miller, a Jefferson grad, and Eley, a Federal Way graduate, played for the Evergreen State Geoducks soccer team. Miller was a junior defender and Eley was a freshman defender. Ely started 13 games and was second on the team with three goals and one assist. Miller started all 17 matches for the 4-10-3 team and had one goal and one assist.

Brennen Hall — The Todd Beamer graduate played at Pacific Lutheran University this season. Hall was a senior and transferred from Highline CC, where he was a two-time NWAACC all star. He started 18 games this season as a midfielder. PLU finished 10-8-1 on the season and Hall had two assists and nine shots.

TJ Young, Ricco Sanchez and Erik Orozco — The threesome played this year at St. Martin’s University. Young and Sanchez are both Beamer grads and Orozco went to Decatur. Young played in six games this season in goal and Sanchez and Orozco each started 13 St. Martin’s matches in the midfield. St. Martin’s finished 7-11-0 on the season. Young gave up four goals and had 17 saves, Orozco had one goal and Sanchez had four shots.

Ernan Roman, Lalo Morales, Amos Nistrian, Brent VanWechel, Austin Egerton and Lenin Ramirez — The six district graduates are all playing at Highline Community College. Roman, Nistrian, Egerton and Ramirez are all TJ grads, Morales went to Federal Way and VanWechel is a Beamer grad. Egerton has five goals for the Thunderbirds and Nistrian has four. Highline is 12-3-4 on the year.

The Thunderbirds beat Treasure Valley, 2-1, in the opening round of the NWAACC Tournament and downed Clark Saturday to earn a berth into the semifinals. Highline will play Shoreline in the NWAACC semifinals at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The NWAACC championship will be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Starfire.
