Men’s basketball
Michael Hale III — The Federal Way High School graduate is playing his senior season at the University of Texas-San Antonio. The 5-foot-8 point guard transferred after playing two seasons at North Idaho College.
Hale III is averaging 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and two steals this season for the Roadrunners, who are 3-1 on the year.
Hale III was recently named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday after earning the Most Valuable Player of last weekend’s season-opening Liberty Tax Classic after leading the Roadrunners (2-1) to the tournament title.
Hale III averaged 20.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game and also shot 54.3 percent (9-of-19) from the floor and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free-throw line.
In Sunday’s finale against host Old Dominion, Hale III poured in a career-high 29 points behind a 10-for-14 performance from the floor, including a 4-of-7 effort from downtown. UTSA’s point guard also added three rebounds, three assists and a steal in the 79-70 victory.
Last year, Hale III averaged 9.9 points and started 24 games for the Roadrunners. During his time at North Idaho, Hale III was second in the Scenic West Athletic Conference averaging 18.2 points and 4.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game as a sophomore.
Jerron Smith — The Decatur grad is now playing at Highline Community College after transferring from Portland State. The 6-foot-3 guard played in nine games last season for the Vikings and averaged 2.4 points. Smith will be a sophomore this season at Highline.
Jeffrey Forbes — The 2009 Federal Way grad is playing his senior year at Eastern Washington University. The point guard has started two games this season and is averaging 2.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. Eastern is 0-3 on the season.
Last year, Forbes started all 30 of the Eagles’ games and averaged 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds. The Eagles finished fourth in the Big Sky Conference during the regular season. As a sophomore, Forbes started 23 games and averaged 9.8 points and 2.6 rebounds a game. As a true freshman, Forbes averaged 10.5 points a game.
Cole Dickerson — The 2010 Federal Way grad is playing his junior season at the University of San Francisco. The 6-foot-7 forward has started both of the Dons’ games this year and is third on the team, averaging 12.5 points and is leading the team with an eye-popping 17.0 rebounds a game.
San Francisco is 1-1 on the year. Last year, Dickerson played in all 30 USF games averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Dons.
Cam Schilling — The 2009 Decatur graduate is playing his senior season at Pacific Lutheran University and is averaging 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game for the 0-2 Lutes. He is a 6-foot-4 forward.
Last season, Schilling started all 25 games and averaged 13.3 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Lutes, who were 12-13. He was an honorable mention, All-Northwest Conference selection.
Travis Wagner — The Decatur High School grad is playing his senior season at Evergreen State University for the Geoducks. The 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 8.0 points and 2.0 rebounds for 0-3 Evergreen. Last year, he averaged 8.0 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. Evergreen State finished 1-26 last year.
Eric Radford — The 2010 Thomas Jefferson grad is playing his junior season at the University of Redlands in California. The 6-foot-5 forward scored 11 points and had six rebounds in a season-opening win over San Diego Christian College. Last year, Radford started 24 games and averaged 4.7 points and 2.3 rebounds a game for the 13-13 Bulldogs.
Xavyr Moss — The Jefferson grad is playing his junior season at Pomona-Pitzer College in California. He took off the 2012 season to study abroad and teach English in Beijing, China.
This year, he is averaging 13.5 points, four rebounds and three assists for the 2-0 Sagehens. During his sophomore season in 2011, Moss was a first-team, All-SCIAC selection after leading the Sagehens in scoring.
Isiah Umipig — The Federal Way High School grad is sitting out to the season after transferring to Seattle University. The 6-foot guard played the last two seasons at Cal-State Fullerton after a standout career at Federal Way. Umipig has to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but is practicing with the team. He will have two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2013-14.
Women’s basketball
Talia Walton — The Federal Way grad is currently playing her redshirt freshman season at the University of Washington. Last year, as a true freshman, Walton played in one game before deciding to redshirt. The 6-foot-2 forward has started all three games this season for the Huskies and is second on the team, averaging 17.0 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. Washington is 2-1 on the season. Walton had knee surgery a month before the season started.
While at Federal Way, Walton was named the Associated Press Class 4A Washington Prep Girls Basketball Player of the Year after leading the Eagles to the state title game. Walton averaged 17 points and close to 13 rebounds per game.
Darah Huertas-Vining — The Federal Way grad is playing her freshman season at the University of Great Falls Montana. The point guard has played in one game so far this season and scored five points during a win over the University of Lethbridge. Great Falls is 7-2 on the year.
Volleyball
Monica McConnaughey — The Federal Way graduate recently finished her sophomore season at Lower Columbia Community College in Longview. McConnaughey was named second-team, All-NWAACC West Region and played in the NWAACC All-Star Volleyball Game Sunday in Portland.
