Titans boys basketball competes in Auburn High School summer league

Todd Beamer had its 2023 season come to an abrupt, controversial end and the team is looking to bounce back in 2024.

Todd Beamer basketball recently took on Stadium High School, the team that ended their 2022 campaign four months prior.

The Titans played its fifth and sixth game of the Auburn Summer League season on June 21 inside the Bob Jones Gymnasium at Auburn High School.

Head coach Brent Brilhante was unavailable to coach this particular game day so assistant coach Trey Burch-Manning stepped up at the helm and coached the Titans.

Burch-Manning had a simple goal for Beamer throughout summer league play. “Since we’ve been here our idea has just been to get better. We got a group of guys that I think are pretty special. We got some talent,” he said.

With that talent, comes an even bigger will to want to improve. “We still have a lot to work out, I think our mentality is just to be better than we were before. Learn something, have a better attitude, better effort just being better,” Burch-Manning said.

Effort is a huge part of summer league basketball because of several factors. First, you have to build your own atmosphere, there are multiple games going on the crowds are just parents so it’s on the players to get motivated. Another aspect is wins and losses don’t really matter, a team’s record at the end of the season isn’t vindictive at all for how the regular season will go.

For Beamer, they are doing a lot of positive things so far over the summer. If the coaching staff wants the team to work on something, they give their full effort. “If we tell them ‘We need to work on our man-to-man defense today, they do everything we’re asking and looking for. That’s an improvement, that’s a win. We run a couple plays, they come out and do it. That’s a win,” Burch-Manning said.

Beamer had a good class of juniors this past year to the likes of Caleb Berry, Will Tellis, Jahlil Loyd and Avion Mclemore who are all going into their senior year. At this point in the year, their chemistry is important for success next year.

“I think their chemistry is really good. They’re all friends with each other, you see them in the hallway together, always laughing and messing around … Those are usually the best teams,” Burch-Manning said.
