Federal Way High School freshman Jaleecia Roland made quite an impact in her first-ever appearance in the postseason.

Roland cleared 5 feet, 6 inches Wednesday afternoon to win the girls high jump at the South Puget Sound League Class 4A subdistrict track and field meet at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. Roland’s jump was the best in the SPSL this season and highlighted a solid performance by several Federal Way school district athletes during the opening day of the SPSL subdistrict meet. The two-day championships concluded last night (after press time) in Sumner.

Jefferson’s Sofia Malamura and Trenton Pinson, along with the Beamer 4×100 boys relay team and the Federal Way girls 4×100 relay team, also took home SPSL championships during the first day of action.

Malamura took home the title in the girls shot put with a throw of 40-7 Wednesday. Malamura finished in front of teammate Kayla Adams, who was second with a throw of 35-8. The throw was the Malamura’s best toss of the season. She finished up in fourth place at last year’s state championships.

Pinson had the best time in the boys 400 meters after he won the first heat in a time of 50.37. Pinson’s time was nearly a second better than Rogers’ Adam McCleary, the second-place finisher.

The Beamer relay team finished ahead of Kentwood after winning heat one in the 4×100 relay in 42.92. The Federal Way girls rolled over second-place Tahoma in the 4×100 relay in a time of 50.28.

Decatur’s Ezra John Griffey didn’t run on Wenesday due to a sore hamstring. The senior was passed through to the West Central 4A District meet in both the 100 and 200 meters.

Griffey, second at state in the 200 last year and third in the 100, came up hurt in the 400 relay at the Shoreline Invitational last month after running a state-best 10.67 in the 100 during the same meet.

The top-10 qualifiers in all events advance to the West Central District Meet, which will be held at Mount Tahoma Stadium on may 16-17. In running events 800 meters and shorter, and all relays, the top three finishers in each event move on, along with those with the next four fastest times.

The Federal Way boys, the champions of the SPSL North dual meet season, got a second-place finish from Andre Barrington in the long jump (21-10 3/4), Beamer’s Marty Fuller ended up second in the discus (155-4) and Decatur’s Justin Englund was the runner up in the 3,200 (9:45.34).

On the girls’ side, TJ’s Kendra Ansotigue was second in the javelin (112-2), Beamer’s Taylor Kartes was second in the 800 (2:22.54) and Federal Way’s Jacqie Evenson ended up second in the 100 hurdles (15.49).

Baseball

Trips to the state tournament will be on the line today at the West Central District Baseball Tournament. Beamer and Jefferson will be two of the four teams vying for a trip to state.

Beamer, the fourth-place team from the SPSL, will take on the SPSL champion Kentlake Falcons at 11 a.m. at Kent-Memorial Park. The winner of the Beamer-Kentlake game earns an automatic berth into the state tournament. The loser will be forced into a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 5 p.m. against the winner of a game between Jefferson and Central Kitsap.

The Raiders and Central Kitsap will play at 2 p.m. at Kent-Memorial in a loser-out game. Central Kitsap finished fourth in the Narrows League.

The first-round of the 16-team state tournament will be played on May 17.

Girls tennis

The SPSL Girls Tennis Tournament will conclude today at Spanaway’s Sprinker Recreation Center. The top-nine finishers in both singles’ and doubles’ action will advance to the West Central District Tournament.

Decatur freshman phenom Meghan Cassens rolled through the opening rounds of the SPSL Tournament. Cassens didn’t drop even a single game during her first three matches. The freshman beat Tahoma’s Katharina Straub in her opening match, 6-0, 6-0, then downed Kentridge’s Reeti Diwan, before shutting out Kentwood’s Laura Araki in the quarterfinals.

Decatur singles’ players Sara Lin and Amanda Son are also still alive for berths to districts. The tournament will start today at 8 a.m. in Spanaway.
