PREP SPORTS WRAP UP: Federal Way girls finish fifth at Pasco Invitational; Cunliffe wins two at Eason

The Federal Way Eagles girls track program finished up in fifth place overall at the prestigious Pasco Invitational Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium in the Tri-Cities.

The Eagles did, however, crown a pair of individual champions during the meet. Sophomore Majerae Gates won the 100-meters in a very impressive time of 11.34 over West Valley’s Chantel Jaeger (11.41). Senior Jaleecia Roland finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 36-9 3/4. The University of Washington signee was nearly 10 inches better than second place in the event.

Roland also finished up in third place in the high jump with a leap of 5-4. The Eagles’ distance medley relay team of Jasmine Johnson, Jessica Evenson, Bianca Arizpe and Khiana Duncan also finished third behind Eisenhower and Jesuit.

The Federal Way boys ended up in 12th place in the team standings at the Pasco Invitational. The Eagles got a strong performance by sophomore Michael Tate, who finished fifth in the 200 meters in a time of 22.82, Meron Simon, who finished fifth in the mile (4:16.32) and DJ May, who finished fifth in the long jump (22-2).

Decatur

The Gators got a pair of individual wins from freshman sensation Hannah Cunliffe Saturday at the Eason Invitational in Snohomish. Cunliffe won the 100 meters in a time of 12.16 and won the 200 in 25.30.

Decatur finished in 10th place in the team standings and also got a seventh-place finish from Tori Zellerhoff in the 3,200 (11:52.35).

On the boys’ side, the Gators got a fifth-place finish from Drew Thompson in the high jump with a leap of 6-2.

 

BASEBALL

Federal Way

The Federal Way Eagles and Darrien Moran shut out the Rogers Rams Friday afternoon on their home field, 4-0. Moran struck out 10 Rogers hitters and allowed only two hits in six innings of work. Senior Nick Tanielu entered in the seventh inning.

The Eagles needed the impressive outing by Moran because their offense finished the game with only two hits, as well. Federal Way was assisted by three Rogers errors and scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Morgan finished 1 for 2 with a run.

The win improved the Eagles to 8-2 in the SPSL South and 9-3 overall. They trail only Puyallup (10-1) and Emerald Ridge (7-1).

Decatur

The Decatur Gators evened their record at 3-3 with an impressive 6-1 win over Bonney Lake Saturday on the road. The Gators used a five-run, fourth inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run by freshman second baseman Brandon Zimmerman.

The Gators scored six runs, despite being outhit by Bonney Lake, 8-5. Zach Jacobs finished 2 for 3 with a double. Sophomore Tyler Finneseth finished with a triple and Romiro Ponce got the win on the mound. Ponce didn’t allow a run in five innings of work and had five strikeouts.

 

SOCCER

Federal Way

The Eagles (5-3-1) picked up a hat trick from freshman Odason Pelogi during a 5-0 win over Spanaway Lake Friday. Pelogi scored goals in the 38th, 39th and 51st minutes for Federal Way.

The Eagles’ other scores came from Sean Tang in the 25th and Gianluca Vaccarini in the 58th. Ben Willis and Koby Craig combined on the shutout in goal.

Beamer

The Titans (8-0-2) remained unbeaten and in first place in the SPSL South with a 6-0 win over Graham-Kapowsin Friday. Beamer got a pair of goals from Ugo Okoli and Troy Peterson and a shutout in net by Nick Bod.

Beamer also got goals from Keplar House in the 35th minute and Kelvin Horne in the 63rd.

Jefferson

The Raiders (6-2-2) played the Kentridge chargers to a 0-0 tie Friday night in Kent. Jefferson’s McKay Owsley and Luis Roman combined on the shutout.

Decatur

The Gators fell out of first place in the SPSL 3A Division with a 4-0 loss to Bonney Lake Friday night. The loss dropped Decatur to 4-2-0 and behind league-leading Auburn Mountainview (5-1-0).

 

SOFTBALL

Decatur

The Gators (0-7) were outscored 32-1 during a doubleheader Thursday against Auburn Mountainview. The Lions beat Decatur, 10-0, in the opening game and got a no-hitter from Alleyah Armendariz.

Auburn Mountainview beat the Gators, 22-1, in the second game and scored 18 runs in the top of the first inning. Decatur managed one hit during that game.
