PREP SPORTS WRAP UP: Decatur, Jefferson lose key SPSL soccer matches; tennis gets back to action

Both Jefferson and Decatur came up short Tuesday in first-place showdowns in their respective divisions of the South Puget Sound League.

The Raiders (6-2-1) lost for the second time this season to the Kentwood Conquerors, 1-0, to fall two points behind the Conquerors (6-0-3) in the SPSL North Division standings.

The Gators, who were the lone unbeaten in the division until Tuesday, fell 3-2 to the Auburn Mountainview Lions in a match that pitted the top-two teams in the SPSL 3A Division. Both teams now sit 4-1-0 in league play.

Tuesday’s game was back and forth all night. Auburn Mountainview (4-1-0 SPSL 3A) struck first in the 12th minute on a goal from Yves Mugisha. But Decatur’s Dominique Dismuke answered with a goal seven minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lions’ Trevor Ralph gave Auburn the lead back in the 43rd minute, before Decatur’s Ali Villalon tied the game up again in the 65th. But Isaac Cordoza gave the Lions the lead for good in the 79th minute on a pass from Sergei Rubakha.

The Kentwood-Jefferson match was just the opposite — a grind-it-out, defensive battle.

Kentwood’s Cody Crook tallied the only goal of the game in the 25th minute on a pass from Jared Fuller. Stein Christensen made the first-half goal stick by earning the shutout in goal for the Conquerors.

Kentwood also beat Jefferson, 2-1, in the opening game of the SPSL North season on March 15.

Beamer 9, Curtis 1

The Titans (7-0-2) remain in a first-place tie in the SPSL South with another blowout win Tuesday in University Place. Emerald Ridge is also 7-0-2 in the South Division.

Tuesday, Beamer got a pair of hat tricks from a pair of Division I-signees. Troy Peterson tallied three goals and Ugo Okoli also netted three. Peterson is heading to the College of Charleston and Okoli will play at Wake Forest next fall. Peterson leads the Titans with 10 goals and nine assists this season and Okoli has nine goals and seven assists.

The Titans’ other goals came from Paul Park, Ike Crook and Chase Nestor.

Beamer will host Emerald Ridge April 22 at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.
