Prep sports wrap: TJ baseball wins slugfest over Federal Way, 17-10

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders won a slugfest Wednesday over cross-district rival Federal Way, 17-10. The two teams combined for 31 hits, 27 runs and four home runs at TJ.

The win improved the Raiders to 7-5 in the South Puget Sound League North Division, which is good for fourth place. The loss dropped the Eagles to 4-7.

Offensively, Jefferson got huge days from Harold Adams and Michael Sigafoos. Adams finished 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and scored three runs. Sigafoos also finished with three RBIs and a home run. Jeff Brigham, Mitch McQueen and Andrew Jones all had two hits for TJ.

Federal Way also got four hits apiece from Nick Tanielu and Austin Weber. Tanielu finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run, and Weber was 4-for-5 with three RBIs. TJ Horsfall finished 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run. Horsfall also homered during a 15-9 Federal Way win Tuesday afternoon.

Beamer (8-4) split a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday. The Titans lost to Emerald Ridge Tuesday, 6-4, but came back to 10-run Decatur Wednesday, 11-1.

Against Emerald Ridge, the Titans took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Jaguars (9-2) scored three of their own in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back. Kenny Johnson finished with a home run and three RBIs and Carson Wolbert was 3-for-4.

Against Decatur, Brian Corliss picked up the win on the mound and was also 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs at the plate. Wolbert finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Decatur (5-6) was led by the 2-for-3 day of Ryan Kim.

Fastpitch

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders moved into third place in the SPSL North with a pair of blowout wins Tuesday and Wednesday. The Raiders downed Kent-Meridian, 15-1, and beat Federal Way, 18-0. Both games lasted only five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. The two wins improved TJ to 8-3 in the North, behind 10-0 Kentwood and 8-2 Kentlake.

Against Federal Way Wednesday, Lexi Goranson and Hannah Kiyohara both drove in three runs each and Alex Rodriguez limited the Eagles to just one hit. Rodriguez also picked up the win Tuesday against Kent-Meridian, allowing just three hits.

Girls track

The Titans took another step toward securing their second-straight SPSL South undefeated season Wednesday with a 77-60 win over Emerald Ridge at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Beamer got three individual wins from Taylor Kartes in the pole vault (7-0), 400 meters (1:01.31) and 800 (2:29.74). The Titans also picked up a pair of wins from Ashley Sandoval in the shot put (31-8) and discus (102-6) and won all three relays. Emma Cortes also won the triple jump (32-7 1/2) and Mercedes Sullivan in the 100 (13.05).

The win moved Beamer to 5-0 in the SPSL South with three dual meets remaining in the regular season.

Boys track

The Titans got three individual wins from DJ May and Duran Ward during an 87-49 win over Emerald Ridge Wednesday.

The victory moved Beamer to 4-1 on the season.

May won the long jump (20-8), triple jump (41-9) and 400 meters (52.04) and Ward took the high jump (5-8), 100 (11.09) and 200 (22.29). Beamer also got wins from Anthony Hogan in the 110 hurdles (14.8) and 300 hurdles (39.59) and Justin Moultray in the pole vault (9-0).

Soccer

The Todd Beamer Titans remained in a first-place tie with the Rogers Rams in the SPSL South with an 8-0 win over Spanaway Lake Tuesday night. The victory improved Beamer to 7-2-2.

The Titans led 7-0 at the half thanks to a first-half hat trick from Troy Peterson and two goals from Brent VanWechel. Beamer also got goals from Marvin Santana, Benjamin Draeger and Ugo Okoli. Draeger and Scott Ferrin combined on the shutout in goal for the Titans.

Things looked pretty bleak for the Decatur Gators Tuesday night against the Curtis Vikings. The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 31 minutes into the match.

But Decatur (5-3-2) battled back with four goals of their own in the second half to tie the Vikings, 4-4. The Gators’ goals came from Michael Klavuhn, Dominique Dismuke, Jordan Smith and Alejandro Davenport.

Jefferson fell to 6-2-3 with a 3-1 loss to Tahoma Tuesday. The Raiders’ Samuel Clement tallied the first goal of the game in the 12th minute.

Girls tennis

The Decatur Gators (6-2) lost their second match of the season Tuesday to the unbeaten Puyallup Vikings, 3-2. The Gators’ wins came from Sarah Lin at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3, and Meghan Cassens and Christina Sessoms at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-0.
