PREP SPORTS WRAP: Jefferson tennis wins SPSL Central, 55th-straight league match

Another year, another South Puget Sound League Central Division championship for the Thomas Jefferson boys tennis team. The Raiders finished a perfect 10-0 in the six-team division Wednesday with a 5-0 sweep of the Todd Beamer Titans.

The perfect 2013 season extended the program’s winning streak in the SPSL Central Division to 55-straight matches. The Raiders’ last league loss came in 2008. It also extended longtime head coach Andrew Buchan’s all-time record at TJ to 245-42.

Next up for TJ is the postseason, which kicks off Friday with the SPSL Tournament. The Raiders finished up in third place at last year’s state tournament after winning the league and West Central District championships. The Raiders also added the Class 4A State Academic championship with a grade-point average of over 3.8.

Jefferson has been led all season by sophomore Alex Chan, who was a perfect 9-0 at No. 1 singles. Chan ended up in fifth place at state last season.

The doubles’ team of Hakeem Clark and Vivek Ramanujan was also unbeaten at No. 2 doubles at 7-0. Cameron Martin was also unbeaten at No. 2 singles at 4-0. Martin and his brother, Zach, finished fourth in doubles at state last year.

Against Beamer (4-6) Wednesday, Chan beat Kolton Rosin at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, Cameron Martin defeated Aaron Ball at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0. On the doubles’ side, Zach Martin and Ramanujan downed Adrian Tong and Logan Davis, 6-3, 6-0, Clark and Alex Papke beat Kyle Weurch and Aaron Nguyen, 6-1, 7-5, and Hyun Kim and Nathan Lim defeated Jordan Frietes and Connor Airis, 6-1, 6-3.

 

Cross country

The Todd Beamer boys cross country team remained unbeaten in the South Puget Sound League South Division by sweeping Emerald Ridge and Bethel Wednesday. The Titans (6-0) beat Emerald Ridge, 20-35, and Bethel, 15-50.

Haftom Tafere led a trio of Beamer runners over the 5,000-meter course at Emerald Ridge in a time of 17:34. Austin Jex (17:35) and Blake Hansen (17:36) finished right behind Tafere. Junior Michael Clark was sixth in 18:24.

The Beamer girls split the three-way meet, beating Bethel, 18-41, and narrowly losing to Emerald Ridge, 27-28. Ashley Mason led the way, finishing second in a time of 21:16. Lily Do was right behind in third place in 22:12.

 

Volleyball

Beamer — The Titans won a hard-fought, non-league match over Christian Faith Monday in five games, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-8.

Beamer (5-3 overall) got a huge match from senior Megan Huff. The 6-foot-2 Huff finished with 21 kills, six digs and 14 aces. She was also 28 for 31 in serves. The Titans also got seven kills and three blocks from Reed Copeland, 12 digs from Aliya Ranis and Camryn Skari was 21 of 26 on serves and also had seven kills.

Christian Faith (5-2 overall) was led by Katice Pond, who finished with 14 kills and four aces. Ciera Zimmerman had 22 assists and two aces, Freda Ireigbe finished with 10 kills and two aces and Alana Jennings had two assists and two aces for the Eagles.

Decatur — The Gators were swept by Enumclaw Tuesday in South Puget Sound League 3A action, 25-14, 25-14, 25-15. No other details were reported.

 

Girls soccer

Jefferson — The Raiders evened their record at 3-3-3 in the South Puget Sound League North with a 2-0 win over Mount Rainier Tuesday in Des Moines. Jefferson got second-half goals from Makaylie Moore and Jasmine Pleasants. Kendra Wallace picked up the shutout in net for the Raiders.

Federal Way — The Eagles dominated the winless Bethel Braves Tuesday, 11-0. Federal Way (6-2-1) got hat tricks from both Gabriela Pelogi and Piper Hutchinson and two goals from Kayley Cruz. Federal Way’s other goals came from Kayla Peterson, Chandler Mader and Sydney Slagg. Payten Hurn and Pelogi also combined on the shutout in goal.

Beamer — The Titans (3-4-2) were shutout by Puyallup Tuesday, 1-0. The Vikings’ lone goal came just after halftime from Jordyn Bartelson.

Decatur — The Gators (0-4) remained winless with a 3-0 loss to Auburn Mountainview Tuesday. Auburn Mountainview got a pair of goals from Kellcy Emory and another from Viktoiya Vasina.
