Prep sports wrap: Gator golfers, Raider runners grab SPSL Central titles

For the second year in a row, the Decatur Gators girls golf team is the best in the South Puget Sound League Central Division. The Gators clinched the division title Tuesday with an ultra-impressive 101-85 win over the Thomas Jefferson Raiders at the Riverbend Golf Course.

The victory moved Decatur to 9-0 on the season and dropped TJ to 7-2 with one match remaining for both teams. It was the second time this season that the Gators have outdistanced the Raiders.

Despite losing the match, TJ got an impressive performance from Alexus Song, who earned medalist honors in the star-studded field by firing an even-par 36 at Riverbend. The Raiders also got an impressive 44 from Katie Seo.

But TJ couldn’t overcome the depth of the Gators, who were led by state tournament veterans Stacey Blunt, Amanda Beyke and Samantha Zeeb. Blunt fired a 39, Beyke finished with a 40 and Zeeb chipped in a 45 for Decatur.

The focus for the golfers now turns to the postseason. The SPSL Medalist Tournament and State Qualifying Tournament will take place Oct. 21-22 at the Gold Mountain Golf Course in Gorst. The top-30 finishers will advance to the Class 4A State Tournament.

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders remained perfect in the SPSL Central Division Wednesday with another impressive win over the Todd Beamer Titans, 25-32. The win moved the Raiders to 5-0 in the Central and gave them the division championship. Auburn Riverside moved to 4-1 with a win over Decatur Wednesday, but TJ beat the Ravens earlier in the season.

Jefferson’s regular season concludes Wednesday against the 1-4 Federal Way Eagles.

Against Beamer, the Raiders used their depth over the 3.1-mile course at Celebration Park. The Titans (2-2) snared two of the top-three spots, including the winning run by sophomore Sara Mussa. Mussa outran TJ’s Monica Jaenicke to win the race in a time of 19:30, compared to Jaenicke’s 19:34. Beamer’s Taylor Kartes finished third in 19:37 and Jefferson’s Lacey Printz (20:13) and Leah Kiyohara (20:26) followed in fourth and fifth.

Jasmine Johnson ran an impressive race Wednesday for the Federal Way Eagles, winning the 3.1-mile race against Curtis. Johnson ran a time of 19:59, but was followed by four Curtis runners. The Vikings won the team competition, 25-32.
