Prep sports wrap: Federal Way soccer downs Kent-Meridian, Beamer gets back on track

The Federal Way girls soccer team picked up its first victory of the season in convincing fashion with a 5-0 shutout of the Kent-Meridian Royals Tuesday afternoon at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles (1-1-1) got a pair of goals from Bianca Arizpe in the first half and single goals from Andrea Ferguson, Leneisha Robinson and Tanisha McGruder.

The three-time defending South Puget Sound League South Division champion Todd Beamer Titans got back on track with a 9-0 blowout of the Spanaway Lake Sentinels Tuesday. The Titans dropped only their second SPSL South match in the last three years last week to the Emerald Ridge Jaguars, 3-1.

Beamer got a pair of hat tricks during the win over Spanaway Lake from senior Holland Crook and sophomore Breanna Straus. The other goals came from McKayla Falecki, Jessica Niewoehner and Lindsey Richou. Meghan Graf picked up the shutout in net.

Crook returns as one of the top players in the state and leads a group of 10 seniors on this year’s roster. The forward has already committed to play next year at Arizona State University. During her stellar career at Beamer, she has amassed 49 career goals and was the SPSL South Most Valuable Player last year and All-State after her sophomore and junior years.

“We have something special going on this year with the team,” said first-year head coach Joel Lindberg, who took over for Carrie Hentschell this fall. “We lost only two seniors from last year. They are looking very strong and are motivated to do well this year.”

Lindberg is still fighting to get his best team on the field. The Titans have been battling early-season injuries.

“Once we have everyone back, we will be even stronger,” he said.

The Decatur Gators moved to 1-0-1 in the SPSL South by tying Curtis Tuesday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 1-1. The Gators goal came from Abby McFaul in the 64th minute to give Decatur a 1-0 lead. But Curtis’ Chloe Roisum tied the game in the 75th minute.

Jefferson (1-2-0) suffered a 3-2 loss to the Tahoma Bears Tuesday. The Raiders got a pair of goals from Lindsey Dahl in the 25th and 60th minutes.
