The Federal Way boys basketball team just didn’t have enough for the veteran Curtis Vikings Thursday night in University Place. The Vikings, who lost in the Class 4A state title game a season ago, beat the Eagles, 54-48, in a key South Puget Sound League South Division game.

Federal Way got back on track Saturday night with a 52-46 win over Rogers on the road. Freshman Malik Montoya led the Eagles with 16 points and sophomore Brayon Blake finished with 13.

Despite the split, Federal Way (10-5 overall, 10-2 SPSL South) remained in first place in the division, thanks to Spanaway Lake beating Beamer Saturday, 67-61. The loss dropped the Titans to 10-3 in league play. Curtis also has three losses in the SPSL South.

Thursday night, Curtis outscored Federal Way, 20-13, during the third quarter to take control of the game. The Vikings were led by 22 points from Darius Johnson-Wilson. Federal Way got 17 points from sophomore Brayon Blake and 12 from sophomore Deonte Anderson.

Beamer — The Titans dominated the second and third quarters to beat Graham-Kapowsin Thursday, 79-57. Beamer outscored the Eagles, 51-29, during the 16 minutes.

Senior guard Roosevelt Jones tallied a career-high 34 points and senior Willie Roach chipped in 17.

But Spanaway Lake outscored the Titans, 43-29, in the second half Friday to walk away with the win. Beamer was led by 18 points from Jones and 17 from Thomas Rhodes.

Decatur — The Gators remained unbeaten in the SPSL 3A with a pair of wins Friday and Saturday. Decatur (14-4 overall, 8-0 SPSL 3A) downed Enumclaw Friday, 67-58, and beat Peninsula Saturday, 69-55.

Decatur was led by the 16 points of Abraham Ferrell-Logan during the home win over Peninsula. Jason Young finished with 15 and Dom Hunter chipped in 13.

Against Enumclaw, the Gators overcame a five-point halftime deficit on the road to win going away. Hunter finished with 25 points and Ferrell-Logan added 22 for Decatur.

The Gators travel to Lakes (7-1 SPSL 3A) Tuesday, Jan. 31 to take on the defending state champions in a game that will decide the SPSL 3A title. Decatur beat the Lancers in their first meeting of the season at home.

Jefferson — The Raiders (8-9 overall, 5-8 SPSL North) swept a pair of games Friday and Saturday. Jefferson beat Bethel in a non-league contest, 69-57, and slipped by Auburn Saturday, 65-63.

Jacob Thoreson led three TJ players in double figures against Bethel at the Les Schwab Kent Shootout Friday at the ShoWare Center. Joshua Duckworth finished with 14 and Daryon James chipped in 13.

Saturday, four Raiders finished in double figures against Auburn. Daniel Park poured in 18 points, James finished with 17, Duckworth had 11 and Thoreson chipped in 10.

Girls basketball

Federal Way — The Eagles (14-3 overall, 12-1 SPSL South) remained in a tie for first place in the SPSL South with a 66-25 win over Curtis Thursday night. Federal Way exploded to a 35-6 lead after the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. The Eagles’ defense held Curtis to single-digit points in all four quarters.

Raven Benton finished with 17 points and Darah Huertas-Vining added 16 for Federal Way.

The Eagles also slipped by Rogers Saturday, 50-47. Federal Way used a 16-4 advantage in the second quarter. Huertas-Vining led the way with 18 points and Benton finished with 13.

Beamer — The Titans (7-10 overall, 4-9 SPSL South) got a big win over Graham-Kapowsin Thursday night, 54-39. The Titans blew the game open by outscoring the Eagles, 14-2, during the third quarter. Beamer got 11 points from Meghan Graf.

But the Titans suffered a 61-49 loss to Spanaway Lake Saturday. Graf and Megan Huff scored 43 of Beamer’s 49 points on the night. Huff tallied 23 and Graf finished with 20.

Decatur — The Gators (6-10 overall, 3-5 SPSL 3A) split a pair of SPSL 3A games Friday and Saturday. Decatur beat Peninsula, 47-37, and lost to Enumclaw, 58-41.

On the road against Peninsula Saturday, Ayesia Rogers led the Gators with 16 points, Acacia Hall finished with 12 and Abby McFaul had 11.

During Decatur’s loss to Enumclaw, Rogers finished with over half of the Gators’ points. The senior finished with 21.

Jefferson — The Raiders (6-10 overall, 4-8 SPSL North) lost a defensive battle Saturday to the Auburn Trojans on the road, 34-27. Jada Piper led TJ with 14 points.
