It was a year of firsts at Friday and Saturday’s Class 4A State Track and Field Championships at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.

Jefferson senior Sofia Malamura became the first-ever Raider girl to win an individual state championship Friday afternoon, when she captured the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 2 1/4 inches. Malamura joins triple jumper Kyle Jenkins as the only individual state title winners from TJ.

Malamura, who is headed to Eastern Washington University in the fall, beat out Battle Ground’s Gaby Dixson, who threw 39-3 3/4. It was Malamura’s third trip to the state track and field meet and her winning throw came on her first attempt of the day.

But the senior wasn’t done. Malamura finished in second place Saturday in the discus with a toss of 125-9. Dixson won with a throw of 130-3.

The Todd Beamer boys 4×100 relay team also accomplished a first. The Titan team of Travis Koch, Duran Ward, Justin Drayer and Josh Waller outleaned Cascade of Everett to win the state title in a time of 42.37. Cascade finished with a time of 42.78.

The relay team’s state title came after Beamer finished second in back-to-back seasons in 2006 and ‘07.

The 4×100 state title also led the Titans’ boys team to a second-place finish behind Heritage High School of Vancouver in the team standings. Beamer finished with 38 points during the two-day meet and Heritage carded 50.

Also helping score points for the Titans was senior thrower Marty Fuller and Ward.

Fuller finished second Friday in the discus with a throw of 165-1. The event was won by Bethel’s Oliver Henry. Both Fuller and Henry are set to play football next season at Central Washington University. Fuller ran for more than 1,000 yards as a running back the last two seasons for Beamer and Henry was an All-SPSL South quarterback for Bethel.

Aside from running the second leg on Beamer’s state championship relay team, the junior finished fifth in the 100 (11.12) and sixth in the 200 (22.4). Drayer ended up in seventh place behind Ward in the 200 (22.41). Waller also finished sixth in the long jump (22-1 1/4), Beamer senior Evan Cook was sixth in the discus (153-6) and junior Anthony Hogan was sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.02).

The Federal Way boys got strong performances from hurdlers Robert Shelby and Gregger Highberg. Shelby finished third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 39.67 and Highberg was fifth in the 110 hurdles (14.96) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (40.17). Eagle triple jumpers Ian Tevis and Andre Barrington finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Tevis jumped 44-5 1/4 and Barrington finished with a leap of 42-10.

The Eagles, who won the SPSL North regular season title, finished in 12th-place overall with 18 team points.

Justin Englund, Decatur’s lone representative at the state meet, was also impressive. The senior finished third in the 3,200 in a time of 9:19.83. Jeffferson’s Trenton Pinson was also impressive during the state meet under warm skies in the Tri-Cities. Pinson, a sophomore, finished fifth in the 400 (50.41) and seventh in the 100 (11.21).

The Federal Way girls were led by the hurdling of junior Jacqie Evenson and the jumping of freshman Jaleecia Roland.

Evenson finished sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.46) and third in the 300 hurdles and Roland ended up third in the high jump with a leap of 5-6.
