t Raiders hold down first place in North for a day before losing to KW
The Thomas Jefferson soccer team’s stay atop the South Puget Sound League North Division standings was short-lived. The Raiders were upended by the Kentwood Conquerors Wednesday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 2-0.
Jefferson (8-3-2) took over first-place in the North following a 2-1 win over Tahoma Tuesday night and a Kentwood loss to Kentlake. But that lead lasted only one day.
The Conquerors (9-3-1), who have held the North Division lead all season, got the game-winning goal Wednesday night from Connor Biggs with 20 minutes remaining in the game. The goal broke a scoreless tie. The win was Kentwood’s second over the Raiders in the last week.
Biggs also scored the game winner during another 2-0 win by the Conquerors on April 22.
The win lifted Kentwood into first place, two points ahead of TJ with one game remaining. The Raiders could have won the SPSL North title with a win last night over Kentlake, coupled with a Kentwood loss to Kentridge (after press time).
The SPSL tournament will be played Wednesday night with the top-four teams from the North Division and the South Division squaring off with berths to the West Central District Tournament on the line.
The goal by Biggs Wednesday night was his third of the season and came on a pass from Chadler Gray.
Kentwood added an insurance goal in the closing minutes when Daniel Brill found Luke Angevine on a breakaway.
The second-half scores came after a fairly uneventful first half of play by TJ and Kentwood. Neither team had a legitimate look at a goal during the first 40 minutes.
The Todd Beamer Titans will join Jefferson at the SPSL playoffs, thanks to a 6-0 win over Graham-Kapowsin on Tuesday. The victory improved Beamer to 8-3-2 in the South Division, which is good for third place with one match remaining.
The Titans got a pair of goals from Alan Kim and single goals from Troy Peterson, Ugo Okoli, Jordan Hale and Daniel Nam. Rockne Simon picked up the shutout in net for Beamer.
