Girls basketball: Federal Way keeps on rolling, shuts down Kentlake Tuesday

The Federal Way Eagles girls basketball team is officially rolling.

After two early-season stumbles against Auburn Riverside and Kentwood, the Eagles have won six games in a row.

During that winning streak, Federal Way has beaten ranked teams like Lewis and Clark of Spokane and Pasco’s Chiawana. The Eagles downed Chiawana in the Tri-Cities on Saturday, 55-48. Federal Way got 18 points from sophomore Darah Huertas-Vining and 15 points each from Talia Walton and TyShana Burgess.

The Eagles trailed Chiawana by two points entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the first-year school 20-11 during the final eight minutes to pull out the win.

Federal Way continued their hot streak on Tuesday by handing the Kentlake Falcons their first South Puget Sound League North Division loss of the season Tuesday, 66-38. The victory improved Federal Way to 4-2 in league play and 8-2 overall.

The Eagles jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and led 25-14 at halftime. Federal Way had 10 players score during the game and were led by the 19 points of Burgess and Huertas-Vining finished with 18 points.

In other girls basketball action:

• The Thomas Jefferson Raiders (4-6, 2-5) were beaten by the No. 1-ranked Auburn Riverside Ravens Tuesday night, 49-31.

The Ravens outscored the Raiders 20-6 during the first quarter and rolled the rest of the way. Jefferson was led by the 10 points of Jada Piper and eight points from Christina Kullberg. The Raiders’ leading scorer, Hannah Kiyohara, finished with only four points against unbeaten Auburn Riverside.

• The Decatur Gators (1-7, 0-6) couldn’t overcome a sluggish first half Tuesday and lost to the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles, 57-40.

The Gators trailed 31-18 at halftime. Decatur was led by the 14 points of Mik’kell Frier and 11 points from Denisha Green.

• The Todd Beamer Titans (0-8, 0-6) remained winless on the year with a 41-28 loss to the Puyallup Vikings Tuesday.

The Titans led 15-14 at halftime, but were outscored 27-13 during the third and fourth quarters. Beamer was led by the eight points of Meghan Graf.
