A Federal Way High School senior was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
Nick Oberst plays tennis for Federal Way High School. Oberst is one of 12 high school students who received a scholarship from the WIAA in partnership with Gesa Credit Union, the Dairy Farmers of Washington, and Les Schwab Tires.
The organizations also awarded three $5,000 scholarships to Sophia DeMarco of Enumclaw High School, Carmen Kiewert of Deer Park High School and Magdalyn Ogden of Clarkston High School as the winners of the 10th annual Smart Choices Scholarship.
In total, $27,000 inn scholarships were provided to local students — the highest amount in the program’s history, according to the WIAA.
Oberst was the Federal Way Mirror Male Athlete of the Week in Nov. 2021. Playing at 1st Doubles in one of the most competitive leagues in the state, Oberst and his tennis partner won the overwhelming majority of their matches to finish as the third strongest team in the NPSL. They also claimed overall victory at an invitational tournament last October.
