On a special night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, the Federal Way Eagles girls soccer team pounded the Kent-Meridian Royals Tuesday, 14-0.
The Eagles (4-5-2 in the SPSL North) got a hat trick and four assists from senior Jacqie Evenson, two goals from Chantel Dixon and Joanne Packer.
During halftime of the game, Federal Way High School honored the best female soccer player to ever come out of the city — Justi Baumgardt-Yamada. The Eagles retired the 1993 graduate’s No. 7 jersey at halftime.
Baumgardt-Yamada was a four-year starter for Federal Way. During her tenure, she was named to the All-South Puget Sound League’s first team in all four seasons, led the Eagles to a pair of state championships. She was the SPSL Most Valuable Player her junior and senior seasons and helped the Eagles finish both seasons as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation by USA Today.
Her senior season, Baumgardt-Yamada was named KOMO-4 News’ female athlete of the year, a Parade Magazine All-American and was the No. 1 girls’ soccer recruit in the nation. She still holds school records at Federal Way for career goals (98) and assists (50).
After graduating from Federal Way, Baumgardt-Yamada went on to be a member of the US National Team from 1993 through 1999. She also played four years at the University of Portland, where she made three Final Four appearances and played in one national championship game.
Baumgardt-Yamada was drafted into the WUSA women’s professional soccer league by the Washington Freedom. She spent three years in the league before it folded playing with both the Freedom and the New York Power.
The No. 1-ranked Beamer Titans (10-0-1) remained on top of the SPSL South with a 7-1 win over Spanaway Lake Tuesday. The Titans got hat trick from Holland Crook and a pair of goals from senior Megan Miller.
The Todd Beamer Titans got the best of their cross-district rival, Decatur, Tuesday afternoon at the King County Aquatic Center, 110-70.
The Titans got a pair of individual wins from Janelle Freeborn and Eryn Murphy. Freeborn won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.20 and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.51) and Murphy won the 50 free (25.18) and 100 free (57.74). Beamer also got a victory from Lesley Elijah in the 500 free (6:14.44).
Decatur’s wins came from Kelsey Crowder in the 200 individual medley (2:16.22), Angela Hansen in diving (178.15), Briley Boggs in the 100 butterfly (59.51) and Ericka Hundrup in the 100 backstroke (1:17.08).
The TJ girls swim team dominated the Auburn Trojans Tuesday at the Aquatic Center, 123-62. The Raiders got a pair of wins from Janice Huynh in the 200 free (2:10.17) and 100 back (1:07.66), Rachel Ervin in the 50 free (27.41) and 100 free (1:03.62), Amber Cratsenberg in the 100 fly (1:02.30) and Katie LaBounty in the 500 free (6:05.97).
Volleyball
The Thomas Jefferson Raiders rolled over the Decatur Gators Tuesday in a non-league match, 25-23, 25-16, 25-15. The Raiders got 37 assists from Allie Crowe, 14 kills from Morgann Green and 13 kills and four blocks from Katelyn Nugent. Decatur was led by the 18 digs of Kendall Jensen and five kills and three aces from Nicole Mareko.
Both Federal Way and Beamer suffered three-game sweeps Tuesday. The Eagles lost to Kent-Meridian, 25-14, 25-19, 25-14, and Beamer lost 25-17, 25-17, 25-14. Federal Way got 15 assists from Trisha Paulino, eight kills from Taylor Harris and five kills each from Monica McConnaughey and Danielle Tanielu.
Cross country
The Thomas Jefferson boys picked up a pair of huge wins Wednesday over Kent-Meridian and Federal Way. The Raiders edged Kent-Meridian, 27-32, and beat the Eagles, 15-48.
Kent-Meridian finished with three of the top-four over the 2.75-mile course at Federal Way High School. But the Raiders’ Chase Braxmeyer won the race in 13:58 and TJ’s depth was too much for the Royals. Jefferson’s Jesse Hagberg ended up in fifth place in 14:45.
The TJ girls also swept Federal Way and Kent-Meridian Wednesday. The Raiders downed the Eagles, 15-50, and beat the Royals, 22-39. Vanessa Bennum won the race in 16:35, followed by Jasmine Johnson from Federal Way. Jefferson’s Monica Jaenicke finished fourth in 17:31.
The Beamer girls suffered their first defeat of the season Wednesday to the Curtis Vikings, 23-34, at Celebration Park. But the Titans did beat Decatur, 15-50.
The Beamer boys swept both Curtis, 26-31, and Decatur, 15-44.
Tennis
The TJ boys remained in second place in the SPSL North with a 4-1 win over Tahoma Tuesday. The win moved the Raiders to 12-2. Kentridge leads the league at 14-0.
Jefferson’s wins came from Joe Lee at No. 1 singles, Makoa Rosa and Kainoa Rosa at No. 1 doubles, Branden Muraki and Ty Garceau at No. 2 and Brandyn Gomez and Anthony Tomyn at No. 3.
Federal Way improved to 6-8 in the North with a 5-0 sweep of Kentlake Tuesday and Beamer moved to 9-4 in the South Division with a sweep of Spanaway Lake Wednesday. Decatur split a pair of matches Tuesday and Wednesday against Spanaway Lake and Curtis and now sit 5-9 in the South Division.
