Federal Way boys and girls sweep Bill Harris Invitational Tuesday

The Federal Way boys and girls track teams were not very hospitable hosts during Tuesday’s annual Bill Harris Invitational at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles swept both the boys’ and girls’ competitions. The Federal Way boys easily outdistanced 11 other teams to win with 138.5 points and the Eagle girls edged second-place White River with 108 points. White River finished with 101 points.

On the boys’ side, the Eagles got individual wins from Meron Simon in the 3,200 meters in a time of 9:56.21, Robert Shelby in the 300 hurdles (39.31) and Maurice McNeal in the 400 (49.10).

Shelby’s time in the 300 hurdles was the best in the state during the 2010 season.

Federal Way also won the 4×100 relay in a blazing time of 42.84, almost two seconds ahead of second-place Decatur, who finished seventh in the team standings. The Eagle team of Ezekiel McNeal, Maurice McNeal, Shelby and Trenton Pinson lead the state in the event.

In the best race of the day, Steilacoom’s Phillip Puccino outleaned Pinson to win the 100 meters. Puccino, who leads the state in the 200 meters, finished with an 11.31 and Pinson, who leads the state in the 100 meters, carded a 11.34. Pinson finished in second place in the both the 100 and 200 at last year’s Class 4A state championships.

On the girls’ side, the Eagles got individual victories from freshman Majerae Gates in the 100 meters, Tiara Fuller in the 100 hurdles, Dyesha Belhumeur in the high jump and Bianca Arizpe in the long jump.

Gates won the 100 in a time of 13.0, Fuller won the hurdles by over a second in a time of 16.13, Belhumeur won the high jump with a leap of 4-10 and Arizpe outdistanced Decatur’s Alaina Butler to win the long jump with a leap of 15-6.5.

The Eagles’ team of Fuller Laneisha Robinson, Arizpe and Gates also won the 4×100 relay in 51.19.

Decatur, who finished fourth in the team standings, got individual wins from Butler in the triple jump (33-8) and Carly Carson in the pole vault (9-6).
