Federal Way athletes gear up for state championships

Wrestlers, swimmers and gymnasts from Federal Way will be competing in the state championships on Friday and Saturday.

Federal Way Public Schools will be represented by 21 wrestlers at Mat Classic XXVIII, a total comprised of 13 girls and eight boys.

Decatur is sending four boys to the Mat Classic.

Senior Leviticus Arizpe will be their representative in the 138-pound class. He finished second at the regional meet where he lost in the finals to Ryden Fu of Tahoma.

Zach Berry, also a senior, was another second-place finisher at the regional meet. He will represent the Gators at 160 pounds.

Sophomore J.J. Dixon was the winner at 170 pounds at regionals, defeating Evergreen’s Enrique Rivera in the finals.

Sophomore Quinzy Salu is the final Gator for the boys team. He finished third in the 220-pound tournament at regionals.

Federal Way is sending only one wrestler to the boys tournament: one of the 220-pound favorites, senior Andrzej Hughes-Murray. He won his weight class at the regional meet when he defeated Camas’ Dylan Ingram 11-5.

Todd Beamer is sending three boys to the Mat Classic, all of them seniors.

Sean Van Earwage will represent the Titans at 145 pounds. He finished second at regionals, losing to Battle Ground’s James Rogers by one point in the finals.

Adrian Avena is wrestling in the 152-pound weight class. He also finished second at regionals with a loss to Union’s Tommy Strassenberg in the championship.

Mitchell Owens is the final Titan going to the Mat Classic after winning the championship at regionals for the 182-pound weight class.

The only possible all-Federal Way final that could take place would be in the 220 pound weight class between Salu and Hughes-Murray.

For the girls, Decatur will be sending three wrestlers.

Auna Carpio, a senior, will represent the Gators at 115 pounds. Carpio won the regional championship and finished fourth in last year’s state tournament.

Junior Glaysia Sparling is representing the Gators in the 190-pound weight class. Sparling also finished second at the regional championships.

Gabrielle Boyd, another junior, will represent Decatur at 235 pounds. She finished fourth in the regional tournament.

Federal Way’s girls team is sending the largest contingent of wrestlers to the Mat Classic with seven traveling to the Tacoma Dome.

Sophomores Anabella Garcia and Amanda Henderson will both represent the Eagles at 100 pounds. They met in the semi-finals at the regional tournament, where Garcia was victorious. Garcia went on to place second while Henderson placed fifth.

Freshman Anjilia Sumandig will wrestle in the 115-pound division. She placed second at regionals, losing to Decatur’s Carpio in the finals.

Jillian Strickland, a senior, is the Eagles’ representative in the 125-pound weight class after finishing fifth at the regional tournament.

Senior Fernanda Carmona was victorious at the regional championships, winning the 145-pound weight class by way of a technical fall over Yelm’s Bailey Fullerton.

Tally Thomas is back at the Mat Classic a year after finishing fifth at 170 pounds. The junior returns after winning the regional tournament with a win over Emerald Ridge’s Kendra Maxfield.

The final Eagle going to the Tacoma Dome is sophomore Mariah Stewart. She finished third in the regional tournament.

Jefferson is sending siblings Raisa and Jasmine Pleasants to the Mat Classic.

Raisa Pleasants is making her first trip to the dome as a freshman. She won the 100-pound tournament at regionals, defeating Federal Way’s Garcia in the finals.

Jasmine Pleasants is a former state champion. She won the 112-pound championship in 2013 as a freshman. Last season, she was kept out of the Mat Classic because of an injury.

She is wrestling in the 130-pound weight class this season. She won the regional tournament with a 3-2 victory over White River’s Erin Redford.

Beamer is sending Hailie Parker, a senior, to the Mat Classic.

Parker finished sixth in the state tournament last year at 235 pounds. She is wrestling in the 190-pound division this year and won the regional tournament with a pinfall victory against Decatur’s Sparling.

Mat Classic XXVIII takes place Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. The first session begins at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Two swimmers make state

Decatur’s Jason Rehberg and Thomas Jefferson’s Casey Nguyen will be the lone representatives from the Federal Way school district at the state swimming and diving championships.

Rehberg is competing in the 1-meter diving event. He has a qualifying score of 322.5, slotting him in 20th out of the 24 divers at state.

Nguyen will be swimming in the 100-yard backstroke event. He had a qualifying time of 57.5, good enough to place him at 19th out of 24 prior to the competition.

The championships begin Friday at 9:45 a.m. at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. The 4A preliminary events are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Finals will be held on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

Acorda will be competing in the vault and bars events.

Tieu will be competing in the floor routine event.

The gymnastics state championships begin at 5:50 p.m. on Friday at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
