Federal Way athletes excel on soccer field

Mel Hicks — The TJ grad is currently playing her sophomore season at the University of Colorado. The Buffaloes are currently 1-1-1 on the season.

Hicks finished her freshman campaign with one goal and three assists after seeing action in all 22 games, including nine starts. Her first career goal came in CU’s NCAA first-round match against Hawaii, helping the Buffs advance to the second round. Hicks recorded two assists in the 4-0 win over Nebraska, tying her for first in the Big 12 for most assists in a single game, a record which she went on to hold for the remainder of the season

“Mel could be a force in our attack and a target player upfront if she chooses to be this season,” said Colorado head coach Bill Hempen. “Our hope is that she makes the right choice.”

Jordann Gilmer — The Decatur grad is entering her sophomore season at Western Oregon University. Gilmer played in 20 games last year, starting seven. She had seven shots on goal, no goals and no assists.

Michelle Borth — The TJ grad is currently playing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Borth was a United Soccer Conference third-teamer last year as a freshman. Borth tallied two goals in 13 starts a season ago. NJIT lost to Army in their opener, 3-1.

Hannah Bridges, Michelle Mohn, Amy Pate, Mallory Murray and Kendall Swynenberg — The fivesome are all currently playing at Central Washington University. Bridges is a Federal Way grad and the other four all went to Jefferson. Bridges and Mohn both played last year. Bridges, a senior midfielder, started all 20 matches and had two assists. Mohn, a junior, also played in all 20 Wildcat games, starting two and finished with a goal and assist. Pate, Murray and Swynenberg are all entering their freshman seasons.

Central opened their season on Thursday against UC San Diego. The Wildcats finished 7-10-4 last year.

Mandy Ploskonka — The senior is playing midfield at Montana State-Billings after graduating from Federal Way High School. Last year Ploskonka played in 20 games, scoring seven goals with one assist. She led the team in goals scored and had game-winning goals against Western Oregon (Sept. 13) and Rocky Mountain College (Oct. 3).

Montana State-Billings opened their season on Thursday.

Kaitlyn Keyes — The 2008 Federal Way grad is entering her freshman year on the Montana State-Billings soccer team. Keyes is a midfielder.

Kristen Johnson — The Decatur grad returns as the starting goalkeeper for the Sweet Briar College (Va.) soccer team. Johnson eclipsed the 200-save mark last season with 216. Sweet Briar opens their season on Tuesday.

Megan Price — The Federal Way grad is playing her junior year at Seattle University. The midfielder appeared in four matches last year, getting off two shots. Seattle U is currently 1-1-0 on the season.

Jordan Salisbury — The 2008 Beamer grad is playing her freshman season at Seattle University as a defender. She has started both of Seattle U’s matches this year.

Tyler Hanson — The 2008 Jefferson grad is currently playing his freshman season at Seattle University. The midfielder and the rest of his teammates open their season today in Irvine, Calif. against Cleveland State.

Kaitlin Bennett — The Beamer graduate is playing her junior season at Mesa State in Colorado. Bennett is a goalkeeper and played in six games last year with three starts. Mesa State opened their season on Thursday against University of Mary.

Breanna Klasen and Cayla Dixon — The pair are playing for Saint Martin’s University in Lacey. Klasen is a Decatur grad and a goalkeeper and Dixon went to Federal Way as a defender. Klasen, a senior, has started 18 games last year in goal and Dixon, a sophomore, started 16. Saint Martin’s opens its season today against Cal State San Bernardino in Lacey.

Bree Rowe — The 2007 Federal Way grad is currently playing at the University of Oregon. The sophomore midfielder played in four games as a freshman. The Ducks opened their season with a 3-1 loss to the University of Portland last week. They host Purdue tomorrow.

Lamar Neagle — The 2005 TJ grad is playing his senior season at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The forward finished third in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in points last year with 20 (nine goals, two assists). UNLV opens its regular season today against Jacksonville at home.

Josh Norwood — The Decatur grad is playing his junior season at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Norwood played his freshman season at the University of Connecticut, before transferring. The midfielder all 20 matches last year for the 49ers and played an integral role on a defense which recorded eight shutouts. Charlotte takes on the College of Charleston tomorrow in North Carolina.

Kelsey Lusebrink, Whitney Lynch and Brittany McKay — The threesome are all set to play at Highline Community College. Lusebrink is a Decatur grad, Lynch went to Beamer and McKay graduated from TJ. Highline opens their season Sept. 5 against Tacoma CC.
