While many have heard the name S.L. Benfica in the soccer world, Federal Way High School alum Aaron Broussard claimed his fourth Liga Betclic basketball title in Portugal for Benfica on June 15.
The 35-year-old point guard has been with Benfica since 2021, and this year was named Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Guard of the Year by Eurobasket.com along with his fourth trophy with the club.
Benfica toppled FC Porto in just four games. Broussard might not have shot the best in game four, but he found other ways to make an impact. Broussard finished with 13 points, collected five rebounds, dished five assists and recorded two steals.
Broussard helped lead Benfica to a 21-1 regular season record this season and has played in the Basketball Champions League since it started back in 2021.
Broussard graduated from FWHS and continued his domestic career at Seattle University, where in his senior year, he averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game, then began his international escapade.
In 2012-13, Broussard played his first professional game in the Iceland Express League before moving to France (4 years), Poland (2 years), Russia (1 year) and Romania (2 years) — and eventually found his home with Benfica.
During his time in France, Broussard’s longest team tenure was with Fos Province Basket, which played out of Fos-sur-Mer, France. Over his three seasons with the Byers, Broussard averaged 13 points per game in the French Second Division.
In his international career, he has played in seven finals across Europe and has won five titles — four titles with Benfica, while his other lone title was with Anwil Wloclawek (Poland).
In the most recent finals, taking on FC Porto, the Federal Way native tallied 18 points in game one and then scored exactly 13 points in games two through four. Broussard’s playoff high in points came in the semifinals against Ovarenese on May 24 — Broussard scored 23.
