Federal Way alum Isaiah Afework sees success in Victoria

He has hit five homers in his last nine games for WCL HarbourCats.

Federal Way High School alum Isaiah Afework is playing his best baseball of the summer with the Victoria HarbourCats over his last nine games.

Since July 9, Afework is hitting .285 for Victoria along with five home runs, two doubles and 14 RBI in those nine games.

Afework is coming off an injury that hampered his sophomore season at Tacoma Community College. But he recently committed to continue his college career down in the Southland Conference for Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

In 31 league games this summer for Victoria, Afework is hitting .260 at the plate, but as of late, he is starting to heat up with all five of his home runs coming in the last nine games.

His best game over the nine-game stretch was back on July 9 in Port Angeles against the Lefties. Afework went 3-for-5 with three home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. The HarbourCats won that game 9-4 over the Lefties.

At TCC in the 2025 season, Afework hit .279 with six home runs, six doubles, a triple and 24 RBI for the Titans. In his freshman season, he hit just one home run and four RBI. In his sophomore season, he improved his slugging percentage by over .200 points, going from .297 to .510.

On the bases with Victoria, Afework has stolen just one base. But at Tacoma, Afework had the second most stolen bases over his two-year span: 24, trailing only Chase Cretti (33).

Afework is not alone in his Washington residency when he heads down to Corpus Christi in the fall. Yakima’s Brody Mills is a former University of Washington left-handed pitcher who will be in his senior season with the Islanders. Corpus Christi has a history of taking players from the Pacific Northwest, especially out of the Northwest Athletic Conference, where TCC resides.

Afework is continuing on that legacy as he dons the Islander blue and green come August.
