District 10 all-star tournaments kick off; Federal Way National wins 9/10-year-old title

Time for the little leaguers of Federal Way to take center stage at postseason all-star baseball tournaments around South King County.

It’s that time of year again.

Time for the little leaguers of Federal Way to take center stage at postseason all-star baseball tournaments around South King County.

The marquee event kicks off July 9 at GSA Park in Auburn. The 2010 District 10 Little League All-Star Tournament for 11- and 12-year-old boys and girls includes eight teams from Federal Way, Kent, Bonney Lake, Fife, Puyallup and Northeast Tacoma. The tournament ultimately culminates at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., in August.

Federal Way National and Steel Lake little leagues will be vying for the District 10 championship. Federal Way National opens up July 9 at noon against Auburn Little League and Steel Lake will take on South Hill, also at noon.

Auburn rolled all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport last year after winning the district, state and regional championships.

The Federal Way National Major all-star team includes Nathan Adams, Dawson Bakker, Shane Cameron, Talon Gyalog, Kyle Heffernan, Dylan Lydell, JV Magruder, Tyler Praven, Chris Richards, Matthew Sposari and Calvin Turchin.

The 2011 Majors all-star team includes Hunter Bowman, Mason DeLaCruz, Alex Evenson, Keenan Fraser, Derek Keyes, Bodan McGraw, Blake Null, Austin Pauls, Ty Sonnenfeld, Gabe Togia and Kyle Williams. The team is coached by Nate Bowman, Joey Sonnenfeld and Jason Cretti.

There are also other District 10 all-star baseball and softball tournaments underway or recently completed around South King County.

The Federal Way National 9/10 all-star team completed a huge comeback Sunday to win the District 10 championship at the Federal Way National Complex.

After losing to Bonney Lake/Sumner in the quarterfinals, 8-3, National fought back through the consolation bracket, winning five games in a row, including two-straight over Kent in the championship round Saturday and Sunday to advance to the state tournament. Federal Way beat Kent, 11-7, in the first championship game Saturday and won the title with an 11-6 victory Sunday.

National also overcame a 9-4 deficit in their final at-bat during a 10-9 opening-round win over Auburn on June 16. Tate Wallat connected on a three-run, walk-off, two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Federal Way National 9/10 All-Star Team includes Malachi Afework, Cole Bakker, Blake Beck, Nate Clow, Tommy Davis, Connor Ellingson, Zak Gregg, Gavin Knapp, Travis Miller, Brandon Niksich, Ben Ray, Spencer Sugg, Tate Wallat and Mark Wright.

The 2011 Washington State 9/10 All-Star Tournament will start July 16 in Kirkland.

The Steel Lake 9/10 all-star team finished 1-2 during the tournament with a win over Fife/Milton/Edgewood. The team included Hunter Burget, Adam Daoud, Quinten Fedor, Rake Fuavai, Justin Maggerise, Cade McFarlane, Cory McKelvey, Raydin McSweeney, Justin Sanders, Conner Smith, Matthew Wanke and Conner Wells. The team is coached by Ron Angelot, Tom Maggerise and Jay Bennett.

The Federal Way National 10/11 baseball all-star team was still alive Monday at the District 10 tournament, which is also being played at the National Complex. National was set to take on Kent Monday (after press time) with a spot in the championship on the line. Bonney Lake/Sumner beat Federal Way in the semifinals and awaits the winner.

The National team includes Ayden Adams, Evan Brewer, Eli Graham, Quin Hanson, Tyler Houston, Tim Hughes, Connor Keene, Garret Morris, Jaison Peterson, Mason Pirio, Luke Tedrick and Tyler Tribble.

The Steel Lake 10/11 all-star team finished 2-2 at the tournament. the team included Darnel Calugay, AJ Chopra, Colin Floyd, Cory Jex, Jake Jex, Cameron Naden, Nick Oka, Brayden Tester, Jared Thompson, Zac Vance, Michael Woods and Travis Zumwalt. The team was coached by Justin Compton, Brandon Severson and Rocky Chopra.

Federal Way National Little League is also well-represented at the District 10 all-star softball tournaments.

The Federal Way National Major (11-12) softball all-star team includes Alex Haven, Alexis Smithwick, Emily Sanchez, Gennie Summers, Grace Sunitsch, Isabelle McLarty, Jessica Kuhn, Peyton Hurn, Sam Simundson, Sophie Afework and Tricia Hultman.

Their District 10 Tournament kicks off Saturday at Brannan Park in Auburn. National will take on a combined team of Auburn/Kent/Tahoma at 9 a.m.

The Federal Way National 9/10 softball all-star team finished up in second place at the recently completed District 10 Tournament, which was held at the Federal Way National Complex. National lost to Chinook in the championship Saturday, 12-2.

The team included Karsyn Bryant, Callie Davis, Olivia Ellingson, Autumn Harris, Destiny Medinam, Kaela Nokes, Naya Page-Hughes, Molly Saeda, Katelyn Tester, Hannah Togia, Leyna Wiley and Hannah Shires.

The Federal Way National Junior (13-14) softball all-star team includes Aleah Adams, Ryann Lacey, Ann McGonigal, Bailey Nelson, Dani Ward, Mads Magruder, Kylie Miller, Meghan Miller, Lupe Havili, Julianna Loving, Morgan Vance and Emily Shires.

Their District 10 Tournament kicks off Thursday against a combined team from Auburn/Kent/Bonney Lake at 6 p.m. at Brannan Park in Auburn.
