The Decatur Gators wrestling team is rounding into shape entering the postseason. The Gators won the prestigious Jaguar Invitational Saturday at Emerald Ridge High School with 191 total points. Decatur outwrestled second-place Kentwood (164.5 points) to outlast the nine-team field, which included prior state championship programs like Kentwood, White River and Vashon.

Gator wrestlers also garnered three individual titles at the Jaguar Invitational from 152-pounder Dylan Aparis, 189-pounder Darren Faber and 285-pounder Tevyn Tillman.

Tillman, the defending state heavyweight champion, dominated his bracket Saturday. Tillman pinned Kentwood’s Alex Verhaar in his opening match and followed with another pin of Emerald Ridge’s Justin Patterson in the semifinals. Tillman then won on a 15-0 technical fall over Kentwood’s Nathan Herrick in the final.

Faber got a little revenge during Saturday’s 189-pound championship match. The Decatur senior downed Emerald Ridge’s Mitch Steed in the final, 6-3. Steed beat Faber, 9-8, during a dual meet Jan. 14 at Decatur. Faber also pinned Steed at the Pacific Coast Wrestling Championships earlier this season.

Aparis was also dominant during Saturday’s Jaguar Invitational. The Decatur junior racked up three pins on his way to the 152-pound title, including a 3:10 fall in the final over Kelso’s Justin Farnsworth.

Decatur also got second-place finishes from Nick Lindholm at 103 and Jerry Doran at 135, and thirds from Rad Krysa (112), Justin Hartinger (119), Joe Franco (130) and Matt Turner (215).

The Thomas Jefferson wrestling team finished fifth at the 19-team Tahoma Mat Classic Saturday. Tahoma won the event with 229.5 points.

The Raiders’ lone individual title came from Kyle McIntosh at 140 pounds. McIntosh beat Oak Harbor’s John Tuttle in the championship match, 6-2.

Jefferson’s 189-pounder Zach Roth ended up second after losing to Shelton’s Jordan Frost in the championship match, 12-0.

Beamer finished ninth in the tournament, thanks to a second-place finish from Johnny Kemman in the 285-pound bracket.

Boys swimming

The Todd Beamer Titans just couldn’t match the depth of the Rogers Rams Thursday and lost, 110-78. The Titans got wins from Shane Clare in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.69), Tommy Fraychineaud in diving (257.35) and Blake Jordan in the 100 butterfly (1:03.92). Beamer also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.67.
