Decatur, Federal Way top girls wrestling meet

The final league match is the All City match at Federal Way High School at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.

The penultimate regular season girls wrestling league meet took place for Decatur and Federal Way on Jan. 19 at Decatur High School.

The two schools also competed against Kentwood, Kentridge, Mt. Rainier and Kennedy Catholic.

Of the 13 weight classes that competed, there was a Gator or an Eagle in every single weight class. Four Eagles and two Gators won two matches on Thursday night.

Federal Way’s Marina Velasco-Bono (125-pounds), Liana Wayman (170-pounds), Cheyanna Wakeham (145-pounds) and Nareufetiri Maiava (155-pounds) led the Eagles. While Decatur’s Ezra Veloria (135-pounds) and Sissy Alefaio (235-pounds) led the way for the Gators.

In head-to-head matchups, Federal Way beat Decatur in four of the six wrestled matches. When Decatur or Federal Way wrestled an out of district team, they were successful 55 % of the time, winning 16 of 29 matches against non-Federal Way schools.
