It wasn’t easy, but the Thomas Jefferson soccer team won the South Puget Sound League North Division championship Friday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Mount Rainier.

The Raiders (12-0-4) will now take on the Federal Way Eagles in the SPSL Championship game at 8 p.m. at Federal Way Memorial Stadium Wednesday, May 8. Federal Way won the SPSL South with a 15-1-0 record.

Mount Rainier, who would have secured the SPSL North title with a win, jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by striker Isaac Gettis with 16:46 remaining in the first half. Gillis connected on an impressive 25-yard shot from the left side of the goal. The shot blasted its way into the upper right corner of the goal.

The game remained 1-0 until senior defender Tyler Hamashima tied the game with just 9:09 remaining in the second half. Senior Rodrigo Robles scored the game-winner with 3:39 left in the game when he got a bouncing ball past Mount Rainier goalkeeper Chais Casis.

Jefferson would have secured the SPSL North title with a win or a tie. Mount Rainier (10-2-4) would have won the title with a win over TJ Friday in a tiebreaker.

Federal Way 3, Rogers 1

The Eagles completed their SPSL South regular season in impressive fashion with the win over the Rams Friday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Federal Way (15-1-0) got goals from Alex Lewis, Luis Sanchez and Garrett Brewer. The Eagles will take on TJ in the SPSL title game Wednesday and are guaranteed either the SPSL’s first or second seed into the West Central/Southwest District Tournament, which will be played on Saturday, May 11.
