Boys basketball: Top-ranked Federal Way just keeps winning, now 10-0

It was another ho-hum week for the unbeaten and top-ranked Federal Way Eagles boys basketball team. The Eagles (10-0 overall, 7-0 in the South Puget Sound League North Division) blasted the Tahoma Bears Friday night, 85-48, and beat up the Kentwood Conquerors Saturday, 83-56.

Federal Way senior Cole Dickerson was pretty much unstoppable during the week, which also included a 137-70 win over Kentlake on Jan. 5. Dickerson, who has already signed a national letter of intent to play next season at the University of San Francisco, eclipsed the 30-point barrier in all three games. Dickerson tallied 35 against Kentlake, 34 against Tahoma and 33 points in the victory over Kentwood.

The 6-foot-6 senior is now leading the entire SPSL in scoring at 25.5 points a game.

Saturday’s contest against Kentwood was supposed to be a battle between two of the better teams in the state. But the Conquerors (4-4) have played a bulk of their season without UCLA-bound center Josh Smith. The 6-foot-10 Smith injured his knee during Federal Way’s win over Kentwood on Dec. 8. He hasn’t played since.

Even without Smith, the Conks hung with the defending state champs during the first half. The Eagles led only 35-29 at halftime before outscoring the Conks 26-13 during the third quarter to take control.

Federal Way also got double-digit points from Tyrell Lewis (16), Robert Christopher (16) and Isiah Umipig (13).

The game against Tahoma was never in doubt for the Eagles. Federal Way jumped out to a 27-7 lead after the first quarter and led 50-25 at halftime. Lewis finished with a season-high 22 points and Umipig added 13.

The Eagles will host the Kent-Meridian Royals Tuesday (Jan. 12) and the Auburn Riverside Ravens on Thursday (Jan. 14).

In other boys basketball action:

• The Todd Beamer Titans remained in third place in the SPSL South with a 71-59 win over the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles on the road Friday night. The victory moves the Titans to 5-2 in the South and 6-4 overall.

Kevin Davis was pretty much unstoppable against Graham-Kapowsin (2-5). The 6-foot-8 senior finished with 26 points on the night and helped Beamer build a 32-25 halftime lead. Junior guard Napa Mefi contributed 16 points and senior Terrelle Loggins chipped in 14 for the Titans.

The Titans will host cross-town rival Decatur at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 12) in a battle for second place in the SPSL South. The Gators enter the game with a 6-1 record in the South, with their only loss coming to the unbeaten Curtis Vikings. Beamer’s two league losses have come to Curtis and Puyallup.
