BOYS BASKETBALL: Decatur, Federal Way win SPSL division games

The Decatur Gators remained one game back of the Lakes Lancers in the South Puget Sound League 3A Division with an 87-77 win over Auburn Mountainview Tuesday night in Auburn.

The Gators (10-5 overall, 4-1 SPSL 3A) tallied a season-high 34 points in the first quarter Tuesday night to take an early 13-point lead. Decatur extended the lead to 59-34 at halftime.

Jerron Smith had 31 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field for the Gators. It was the sixth time this season that Smith, who is averaging 27.7 points a game, has tallied 30 or more points. Smith also made 12 of 15 free throws against Auburn Mountainview.

Junior guard Dom Hunter made all five of his 3-point attempts and was 11 of 12 from the field while scoring 27 points for the Gators.

In other action:

at Federal Way 81, Emerald Ridge 50 — The Eagles got back to .500 with a blowout win over the Jaguars Tuesday night. The victory came a day after Federal Way lost to Franklin at the King Holiday Hoopfest.

The Eagles (7-7 overall, 6-4 SPSL South) jumped out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and cruised. Federal Way’s leading scorer, senior Jerry Duckworth, finished with 22 points and freshman Eugene Artison ended up with a career-high 16 points. Duckworth is averaging 21.8 points a game.

Kent-Meridian 77, at Jefferson 69 — The Raiders got a career-high 30 points from Deontae Davis, but it wasn’t enough against the Royals Tuesday night.

Kent-Meridian (10-4 overall, 7-3 SPSL North) took control of the game by scoring 29 points in the second quarter and had seven players score at least six points. Chase Braxmeyer chipped in 11 points for the Raiders (4-10 overall, 1-9 SPSL North).
