Beamer’s Murphy inks with New Mexico State

Todd Beamer High School senior Eryn Murphy will be swimming next season at New Mexico State University. Murphy, a freestyler, signed her national letter of intent with the Aggies on Monday at a ceremony inside the Beamer cafeteria surrounded by her parents, Mike and Arlene.

“They have a really good swim program,” Murphy said. “Their coach is fabulous.”

Murphy led the Titans’ 200-yard freestyle relay team to the 2008 Class 4A state championship and a fourth-place finish in the overall team standings. Murphy teamed with Kelly Erickson, Jessica Soria and Rachel Kim to easily outdistance second-place Newport in November inside the King County Aquatic Center.

Murphy also swam the freestyle leg during the Titans’ third-place finish in the 200 medley relay at the state championships.

Murphy also finished up fifth in the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.19 and sixth in the 100 free (52.94).

New Mexico State currently has seven team members from the state of Washington on its roster. The Aggies finished in third place in the Western Athletic Conference last season.

“They have a lot of Washington kids and that really caught my attention,” Murphy said.

Muprhy chose New Mexico State over schools like Florida Gulf Coast University, Youngstown State and the University of San Diego. She visited all four campuses during the recruiting process.
