ALL-CITY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM: Guards highlight 2010-11 first-team

2011 All-City First Team

Jerry Duckworth, Federal Way

The Federal Way senior turned from basically a 3-point specialist last year to an all-around scorer for the Eagles this season. The 6-footer led Federal Way in scoring at 21.1 points a game and tallied double figures in 22 of the Eagles’ 24 games. And he was still one of the best long-range shooters in the SPSL and the state.

Duckworth scored a career-high 37 points during a loss to Puyallup on Jan. 14 for the 14-10 Eagles, who finished fourth in the SPSL South. He had 23 points during a winner-to-state, loser-out game against Olympia.

Duckworth was also a first-team, All-SPSL South selection by the league’s coaches.

Napa Mefi, Federal Way

The senior guard had a solid season during his first year at Federal Way. Mefi played his first three years at Beamer before transferring last spring.

During Mefi’s three-year career at Beamer, he amassed a school-record 918 points. Mefi also led the Titans into the West Central District Tournament during all three seasons and the program’s first, and only, trip to the Class 4A State Boys Basketball Tournament in 2009.

The 5-foot-11 Mefi finished his senior season at Federal Way scoring 11.8 points a game and tallied 23 points in a big loser-out victory over Union at the West Central District Tournament.

Mefi was a second-team, All-SPSL South Division selection by the league’s coaches.

Thomas Rhodes, Beamer

The 6-foot-2 junior was a triple-double machine for the Titans this season. Rhodes finished the season with a handful of triple-doubles with points, rebounds and blocked shots.

Rhodes was an honorable mention All-SPSL South selection despite playing in only 13 games. He averaged 18.1 points and 12 rebounds for the Titans, who finished 6-13 on the season. Rhodes had a season-high 31 points in a Jan. 21 win over Bethel.

Deontae Davis, Jefferson

The 5-foot-10 senior played a lot bigger than his size for the Raiders. Davis averaged 15.4 points and 7.5 rebounds. He also led the team in steals and was second in assists. He was also in the top-three in the SPSL North in offensive rebounds.

“Deontae had a great year for us,” said head coach Kyle Templeton. “He was always able to find a way to score and kept us in games that we wouldn’t have otherwise been in. He was also solid defensively for us, he guarded the opposing team’s best wing every game.”

Dom Hunter, Decatur

The 5-foot-11 junior guard was the Gators’ second option on offense during the season. Hunter averaged 14.2 points a game to help Decatur advance to the program’s fifth-straight state tournament. Hunter finished with 370 points, including a career-high 27 points during wins over Auburn Mountainview on Jan. 18 and Peninsula on Jan. 4.
