Pole vaulting and Thomas Jefferson have just gone together during the 2009 season.

Wylie Johnson led a very strong group of Raider pole vaulters during the second day of the South Puget Sound League sub-district track and field meet Friday at French Field in Kent.

The TJ senior cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to win the SPSL title. Johnson was joined on the podium by teammates Matt Barner (fourth, 12-6), and Jonathan Volland (seventh, 12-0). All three qualified for Friday and Saturday’s West Central District Meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma.

Beamer’s Duran Ward cemented his place as the top sprinter in the SPSL Friday by running the best time in the 200 meters. The senior backed up his 100 title, which he won earlier in the week, by running a 21.93 in the 200. Ward was the only runner under 22 seconds. Federal Way’s Trenton Pinson was third in the race in 22.24.

Ward’s teammate, Anthony Hogan, ran the best time in the 300 hurdles Friday (38.63), just ahead of Federal Way’s Robert Shelby (38.79).

Federal Way’s Andre Barrington finished second in the triple jump (44-11 1/4) and third in the high jump (6-6). Andru Pulu was third in the shot put (52-0).

On the girls’ side, the Federal Way 4×200 relay team tied for the best time during Friday’s session. The team of Tiara Fruller, Laneisha Robinson, Jaleecia Roland and Jacqie Evenson ran a 1:43.33, which was the same time as Kentwood. Evenson also finished second in the 300 hurdles in a time of 44.81.

The West Central District Track and Field Meet is slated for Friday and Saturday at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma. The meet will kick off at 11 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday at 10 a.m.
