In a game of stars, Andru Pulu stood out Saturday at the East-West All-Star football game at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The recently-graduated Federal Way High School middle linebacker was a beast on the defensive side of the ball for the West team. Pulu finished the game with seven solo tackles and was the only player on either team to reach double digits in total tackles with 12.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder showcased the talent that earned Pulu a full-ride scholarship to the University of Washington during the all-state game, which the East squad won, 13-12. Pulu’s play Saturday also included a batted down pass in the fourth quarter.

“He is an awesome football player,” West head coach John Ondriezek, who coaches at Mariner High School, told the Everett Herald. “He’s an anchor on that defense. He knows where the ball is, and he goes and gets it. He plays very aggressively, but he’s also a very disciplined football player. He’s always going to be where he’s supposed to be.”

Pulu was the only University of Washington recruit playing the annual East-West All-Star football game in Everett. He will be a highlight of new head coach Steve Sarkisian’s first recruiting class. Pulu previously committed to former UW coach Tyrone Willingham, and then reaffirmed his commitment after Sarkisian was hired in early December.

This summer, Pulu has been spending four days a week in Seattle, working out informally with his new Husky teammates. He will be on campus for freshman orientation later this month and will start preseason practices with the Huskies in August.

“I’m excited,” Pulu told the Everett Herald. “I just want to get started. I’m ready for the season.”

Pulu was selected for the all-state game after a standout career at Federal Way. He was a first-team, All-South Puget Sound league North Division selection on both offense and defense and was voted the league’s lineman of the year in the fall. Pulu led the Eagles into the state playoffs for the first time since 1976.

“He’s a local kid and I am anxious to watch him develop,” Sarkisian said. “He may develop into a defensive lineman, I don’t know, but right now he’s a big physical inside linebacker who can put his hat on guys. I think he can have an immediate impact on special teams.”

Pulu also qualified for the Class 4A state track and field meet in both the shot put and discus. He finished 11th in the shot and 10th in the discus.

Pulu’s Federal Way teammate, Andre Barrington, was also selected to play in the East-West game, but didn’t make the game because of prior commitments. Barrington, a running back/linebacker, will play at Washington State in the fall.

Federal Way head football coach John Meagher served as the defensive coordinator for the West team on Saturday.
