L. Maurice Huggins

L. Maurice Huggins passed away September 18, 2012, after a courageous 4 year battle with kidney cancer. He went peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family.

Some of his many accomplishments included earning his B.S. and M.S. at Western Washington University and his Ph.D. in education at the University of Idaho. While attending the Univ. of Idaho, he was involved in paleobotanical research that led to the discovery of a new genus of plant—the first genus to be discovered in 200 years. In addition, he published articles in four prestigious scientific journals and was listed in the Who’s Who in American Botany.

Because education was so important to him, he became a teacher. He taught in the Duvall, Lake Washington, and Federal Way School Districts. In Federal Way he was principal at Lakeland, Valhalla, and Adelaide elementary schools. He also was an Associate Professor of Education at Whitworth College in Spokane.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, his daughter, Leslie Sanford, and her husband, Andrew of New Mexico, his sister, Wava Masterson, brothers-in-law, Joe Masterson and Tom McGilchrist, nieces, Michelle Masterson and Morgan Moore, and nephew, Mike Masterson. He will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.

Services will be at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Federal Way on September 27. Rosary will be said at 10:00 A.M. and the service will begin at 11:00 A.M. A luncheon reception will follow in the church parish hall.

Memorials may be given to kidney cancer research.
