From the City of Federal Way:

The Federal Way Community Center is open to provide shelter services for homeowners suffering power outages and homeless individuals needing relief from winter temperatures. New Hope Community Church is also providing overnight shelter services Thursday evening.

The community center is located at 876 S. 333rd St. Shelter service will be available through Friday afternoon. Pets are not allowed. New Hope Community Church is located at 31411 6th Ave. S.

As snow turns to freezing rain Thursday, Federal Way Public Works and police are responding to a growing number of weather-related emergencies. Crews are removing fallen trees, addressing darkened intersections and working to re-open closed roads.

As of Thursday, public works lists the following roads as closed:

· Redondo Road, from 13th to the bottom of the hill

· Dash Point Road, from SW 26th to SW 30th

· Milton Road, at 370th

· S. 304th, from SR 99 to 20th Ave. S.

In addition to closed roads, scattered power outages have left some Federal Way intersections dark. Police are reminding citizens to treat darkened intersections as four-way stops.

Police and public works are coordinating to identify, assess and respond to weather-related problems, as crews and officers survey the city, and in response to calls from the public.

Citizens may report problems or inquire about street conditions by calling public works at (253) 835-2700 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The after hour message center at (800) 400-0749 handles calls between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. and on weekends. Calls to the message center will be routed to on-call staff and responded to, according to priority level.

Public Works and Parks Maintenance crews have been working 12-hour shifts since Saturday to be able to respond quickly to weather-related problems. The Public Works Department prioritizes clearing major and minor arterials, collectors and particularly hazardous roadways first, before moving on to plow residential streets.

Citizens requesting immediate plowing due to a medical emergency must call 911. The police department will then coordinate with Public Works.
